Allready known around Oslos rock scene as a kick ass rock and
country band, Shit City released in may 2007 their critically
acclaimed debut album, God Bless Our Home. The release was followed
by a number of gigs around the country, visiting both festivals
(Down On The Farm, Vinstra Country Music Festival, Øyafestival) and
smaller music clubs as a headliner. Sharing stage with among others
Gillian Welch, John Paul Jones, Flaming Lips and Drive-by Truckers
gave Shit City the opportunity to reach a wider audience and the
year ended with a nomination for best country act at the Norwegian
grammy awards. No price was taken home but for the 8 piece
ensemble it had been a remarkable year.
Listening to Shit City you can easily hear their love and
dedication for bands such as Allman Brothers Band, Grateful Dead,
CCR, The Band and others but they definately have created their
own tasty musical recipe. Three guitars, a pedal steel guitar,
earth-shaking bass, blues harp and two drummers are now the
current instrumental line-up, after singer and Fender Rhodes player
Ingrid Olava left for what has become a successful solocareer.
After a lot of touring and happenings in 2007 and the first half
of 2008 Shit City went into Laidback Studios, Oslo in June 08 to
record a demo for what was going to become SHit City, follow up to
God Bless Our Home. 10 songs were carefully put to tape and it
turned out so well some of the most eager members talked about
releasing the actual demo. Fortunately that did not happen (the
recording may have been very good but the sound quality was not
satisfactory) so a new recording session took place in late August
this time at Parachute Studios also located in Oslo.
Coming into the delicately lighted Parachute Studios with it's
big recording room and great engineer Roar Nilsen, Shit City
developed the already well crafted songs from the demo session into
even more complex arrangments and managed to bring their infamous
live energy to tape. God Bless Our Home was often compared to
the live performances of the band and found to light. This time
drums, guitars and the bass are more up front in the mix and gives
the recording the edge it deserves.
Shit City the album may be less country than it's predecessor but
traces of major chord heroes can still be heard on songs such as
Portuguese Harbor and I Had A Friend. Also this time the
band explores heavy soul territory and almost jazz-like landscapes
..burner and Bottles Empty. And with the song Shit City the
band travels into deep space with a 8 minute long psychedelic
tale of cowboys, shotguns and David Crosby.
Album, Shit City is available from you local record dealer monday
March 16.
Check out calendar for upcoming shows.
2009 will be a hell of a ride.
