Story behind the book
o The unlikely collaboration story began with scholar Victoria Pringle, then student teaching in New Mexico. Victoria was inspired to share her art through a storybook as a gift before returning to college in Vermont. Through mutual friend, (LaDonna Harris; Founder of Americans for Indian Opportunity www.aio.org), Victoria met with Shkeme and the resulting project was a simple color paper book. Taking a chance, the book was then submitted to the prestigious University of New Mexico Press who picked up the project for US and international distribution!

Book Description:
o “Coyote and the Sky – How the Sun, Moon, and Stars Began” is an all ages book with 14 charmingly beautiful illustrations. Writing for the younger reader, Emmett 'Shkeme' Garcia, a member of the Santa Ana tribe, shares his Pueblo's story of the beginnings of the stars and constellations. Victoria Pringle's illustrations provide visual elements that enhance the action of the story. “Coyote and the Sky – How the Sun, Moon, and Stars Began”, is available at local bookstores and through Internet shopping sites.

STORYTELLER: Customary to many Native American Tribes, storytelling is both a form of art and entertainment. During the long winters people hoped “The Storyteller” would choose their home to come tell stories! Through stories “The Storyteller” would expertly create a vivid tale. As the listener used their own imagination, “The Storyteller” would cleverly demonstrate good and bad behavior, building suspense and end with a resulting lesson. Naturally a storyteller, Shkeme draws upon traditional and entertainer skills as he shares various stories of “Native America”. Shkeme weaves each story with humor, dramatic narration, lively characterizations, and life lessons. Especially considerate of the audiences he is performing for, Shkeme will often add an unexpected humorous modern twist or audience participation element to his storytelling!

CULTURAL EDUCATOR: Well-versed in New Mexico Pueblo history, including modern day issues, Shkeme presents cultural education in an interesting and charming approach. Presentation includes a Q & A portion, can be customized by length, content and even to correlate to the event or company’s theme.

SPEAKER: A lively and experienced speaker, Shkeme’s unique life experience, message of cultural empowerment, and positivity create a powerful motivational presentation. Presentation theme will take into consideration the type of function you are organizing and specific messages appropriate for the organizer’s function.

TRADITIONAL PUEBLO SINGER/DRUMMER: A cultural leader in his community Shkeme’s role includes composition of traditional songs, keeper of the drum within the drum society and sharing knowledge with the youth and community members

PRODUCER/PARTNER:Emergence Productions Emergence Productions specializes in Native American & Indigenous Performing Arts through event production, artist management, and youth cultural empowerment.
