Informed and eclectic indie sounds from this gang of Salford students. Welding the oddball arrangements of the Super Furry Animals with the esoteric sounds of Pavement, The Shmatte Kid manage to hold it all together with their unique melodic glue. ----------------

... First up are The Shmatte Kid, who have lots of hair and a brass section. They’re as English as Sunday dinner with all the trimmings, with at least as many ingredients: XTC quirks, Kinks storytelling pop sensibility, Madness bounce, Dexys soul and a good few jangly indie guitar parts – and that’s just the first song! .... The Shmatte Kid have dumped the instructions and assembled their own intriguing way into something very now. Songs change direction when you least expect it, thumping ska-flavoured beats giving way to poppy little interludes... One song is “dedicated to the worst band in the fucking world – U2” and angry screams questioning the point of listening to said behemoths descend into air-raid siren keyboards, ending up in a tasty stew of psychedelic Mod stomp.
