Shmoo's third single, Amnesia, sees the band exploring their sound in greater depth with an explosion of high energy drums, electronic beats and lush synths.
Catchy hooks, a killer vocal and vocoded harmonies all conspire to make Amnesia a track of epic proportions aided by the addition of a string quartet from Manchester's world renowned, Elbow collaborating Halle Orchestra. And the results show that Shmoo are just as adept at scoring string sections as they are at tinkering with old analog gear.
Likened to a Kraftwerk versus MGMT mash-up with soaring Muse-like arpeggiators, Amnesia reveals its dark and light sides as it showcases the impressive vocal range of Shmoo frontman, Neil Newport, against a Massive Attack influenced middle eight.
After playing a sell out show at this year's Manchester International Festival, which garnered rave reviews from BBC Introducing, Manchester stalwart DJ Dave Haslam, and Xfm's Jon Kennedy, Shmoo have a busy schedule ahead: including support with Warp Record's Max Tundra before his tour with Passion Pit, and various head line shows at this years InTheCity and Oxjam to name but a few, who knows what's next in store for these "battle hardened Militant Analogue beasts" (Quote Full page Article Manchester Evening News)... ... ...
An unforgettable track quite ironic really seeing as it's called Amnesia...

"Is It Isn't It" is Shmoo's second single on up-and-coming Manchester Label Station Dynamic. Following on from the success of their first single "She Machine" (think Daft punk, Justice) which was out in April, Shmoo quickly delivery their second onslaught this time available exclusively digitally, juxtaposed to their previous "analog" release, riding the transition into a new digital world. This track embodies Shmoo's unique beat driven electronic sound, though this time the title track is more similar to that of "Every Second" (b-side of "She Machine") in which aggressive/ passionate vocals are at the foreground apposed to the vocoder.
The story starts on a dance floor, with hard hitting dirty 4-to-the-floor beats... then as the lyrics hit they take you on a day-in-a-life-time linear journey... hangover- relationships- arguments- weekends- parties- sex- super heroes- manchester- break ups- life... then asks many questions?; some mundane, some pivotal! with only one answer... "is it time to go? NO!"
Shmoo's second installment was single handedly recorded by the band in their attic studio: mixing up 909 beats and live drums, laying vintage Moogs and SH2 bass lines. The tune, mixed by producer/engineer Robin Housman (Magic Arm, Gideon Conn, Real Dolls), has been ripping up dance floors and indie clubs to-date. With festival gigs coming up/behind them (Future Sonic, Hungry Pigeon), and a main stage performance due at the Manchester International Festival alongside Delphic, "Shmoo (as photo'd in the literature building up the the event next to Guy Garvey and Xfm/Hacienda DJ Dave Haslam ) are a band Kasabian could never even dream of becoming..." "She Machine" (Debut Single) - Press Release
"DONT TURN OFF THE ANALOG!"
At a time when analog signals are being replaced with digital, and people are being absorbed in a digital world of computers, SHMOO draw attention to the beauty of analog with their forthcoming single SHE MACHINE on new Manchester Label STATION DYNAMIC.
"She Machine" introduces you to Shmoo's trade mark vocoder sound (think Beasty Boys "Intergalactic") though in this installment its takes the role of lead vocals. Piling up layers of electronic beats, live drums, and synths; packed full of moog laden "Air"-esc filters (think Moon Sarfi) and gorgeous pads, their mix creates a deliciously retro but unique sound. Its memreble chorus "Synthesis! Synthersize This!" (wouldn't seem out of place on a Kraftwerk track), combined with a killer twist at the end, with the surprising introduction of powerful male vocals, brings the tune to a climatic anthemic ending.
In contrast "Every Second" isn't focused on Vocoder but instead introduces you to vocals with a hint of Muse with a punkier edge. With thrashing drums aslongside dirty beats, bass and soaring arpegiators it's no wonder this track is a show stopper live.
The Newport brothers (David and Neil) have been busy working on various projects over the last few years exploring the realms of electronic music. During this time they built a studio in the attic of their flat in Manchester, surrounded themselves with old school synthesizers, samplers, drum kits and drum machines, and focused their efforts on writing and recording lots of music. Neil decided to take the helm on lead vocals accompanied by Dave on vocoder, both playing vintage analog moogs live, the brothers have teamed up with newest member drummer Ady Batt playing on a hybrid electronic/acousitc drum kit. Live the three piece are all wired together via an old sampler full of hard hitting beats and sampled synthesizers, everything you can want in a live electronic synthed-up indie/dance band!
In a short space of time, they've secured some impressive gigs, their third seeing them share the main stage alongside Roisin Murphy, Roni Size Reprezent and Stereo MCs, and with recent gigs seeing them support Lady Hawke and Ratatat. Their synth heavy sound, fat bass lines, exploding beats, blips, and killer melodies the Shmoo sound belongs on the dance floor and indie clubs alike.
After creating the World, the Gods wondered where they could hide the key of Life. One of them paused and said: “There is one place on earth where the Humans will never look. Their own heart”. Thanks for the add.
