SHOEGAZER - Intoxicated Birthday Lies (CD, T.O.N., Hard rock)
I liked the last release from California thrashers Shoegazer, but their latest is even better...due mostly to the drastically improved sound quality. In a world where too many blaring, loud bands exist, it's easy to get them all confused. This band simply comes across better because they sound sincere...and because they're a lot more creative than your average thrash band. This CD contains mainly rockers, but near the end the band goes off an a very interesting tangent in the tune "Powerconverter" (reminds me of Harvey Milk). Fast, furious, hyper, and at times difficult, Shoegazer is a strange one. (Rating: 5)

Taking a couple steps down to the sixth slot is Shoegazer with "Intoxicated Birthday Lies." After wallowing in hideous disregard during its first album and a handful of singles, Shoegazer is finally being recognized as one of the more outstanding bands in Southern California today. It has made a slick transition from the cookie-cutter pop-punk its earlier material held, to the intense, aggravated tone of its current release. Keeping the speed and urgency of punk, the band adds hints of Drive Like Jehu and Fugazi to the mix, ending up with a furious sound that is far from simple and quite a bit more individual.

Make no mistake, Shoegazer have nothing to do with the early-nineties UK dreampop scene. They're loud, obnoxious (in a good way), intense punk rock. Guitars churn and sputter, drums get a near-fatal pounding and microphones cower in abject fear. Few of these songs get much beyond two minutes, though "Powerconverter", with its irresistable chorus of "motivator motivator motivator motivator motivator motivator motivator motivator", has an additional eleven minutes of, umm, extra stuff. Play this loud enough, and you'll forget about Green Day altogether.

Shoegazer - "Two Boxing Brown Bears" - CD
Really great hard-core that is in the vein of Avail, one of the best bands in the world. The songs are pretty standard hard-core, but they are done really well with a lot of energy and feeling. This is definitely one of my favorite releases of the issue.
