   About Shona Laing

Moments like these - Shona Laing

Shona Laing has always had an ambiguous, sometimes turbulent relationship with the music industry (who hasn’t). Integrity and respect have always been non-negotiable for Shona.

She is an intelligent and hugely talented singer / songwriter who surfaced as a result of extensive television exposure on the show ‘New Faces’ in 1972 with her song 1905 (dedicated to Henry Fonda). Still a teenager she collected gold discs, Rata Awards and represented NZ (twice) in the Tokyo World Song Festival before relocating to the UK where, amongst other things, she was a member of Manfred Mann’s Earth Band.

Following her return to New Zealand she released a number of albums for both Pagan and Sony, as well as extensively touring Australia (Glad I’m Not A Kennedy was a number none single there) and the USA where she supported Erasure.Shona has an extensive catalogue of material that not only spans three decades but continues to endure, and endures well! She has currently completed her new album "Pass the Whisper"

This is Shona's comments about her new albumn - "Some old songs are revisited including Kennedy and Soviet Snow. Other songs are as old but have only really found their place recently. It is all played, acoustic guitar-based, with the colour of penny whistle, Northumbrian pipes, bhodran (the Celtic drum), acoustic upright bass, brushes… vocals. The process of finding the players and the place and time has been so natural, no industry pressure at all and I feel it is the best work process I’ve ever been through"

wonderful wonderful wonderful..thank you for adding "caught". I love your music so much, your view on the world is so perfect. "New on Earth" will always be one of my favorite recordings by anyone, anywhere. Also the song "Andrew says" still makes my soul shudder. Thank you so very much for the years of brilliance. You rock Shona, like no other.

Hi Shona,

Thanks for the add and I also want to mention what a beautiful version of Soviet Snow this new one is. I not sure if that is a correct word to use because of the subject matter, but it is the first that comes to mind.

It is a simple, gentle version and makes me feel that I am in the same room as yourself peforming the song whilst listening to it.

I also have enjoyed your music since the wonderful South and also bought New On Earth. I will now go out and get a copy of Essential and also look forward to getting a copy and listening to Pass the Whisper.

Thank you for your music and hope you can visit Sydney soon and perform.

James

Thanks for the comment back! Is it possible to put the original one up as well, or would you rather have the folk angle retained? I know that's how you started and where you've come back to - hooray, full circle - but it would be cool to have it on my profile. I had the new one on it a couple weeks ago, so so soothing.

Dear Shona,

Thank you so much for the add. "Soviet Snow" is one of my favourite songs of all time and this new version brings a whole new perspective to it! In fact, it almost makes the bitter chill of Cold War seem... warm.

So nice to have you here. Welcome.
Jim

GDay Shona
I have always wondered where you got to after the Gald im not a Kennedy days. I only saw you live on Countdown again the other day when Foxtel replayed some old shows. Good to see you are still going as you have a great voice. Let me know if you are ever going to play in Australia as I will be there.
