Short Kut
Bio:
Short Kut, also known as “Shorti Short Kut”, or just “Shorti”, is one of the most creative musicians to hail from the Midwest.
Born and raised in Indianapolis, IN, Short Kut has had his foot in the music game since age 12, and since then has gone from rapping at local house parties to songwriting, producing and assisting on scores for movies. His last “main stream” album, “Short Kut 2”. was released in 2000 under Worldwide Records/ Short Kut Productions. Working side by side with legendary Drummer/engineer, Tony Harvey, Short Kut wrote and produced all 23 tracks on the album.
“I know that my last large scale release was in 2000, but I have been recording and dropping underground albums since then. I am a perfectionist, and very critical of my work. I may be in love a song as soon as I leave the studio, get hyped, and start thinking about an album, but then 4 songs later change my whole direction. I could just drop anything, but why? Your album is a reflection of you, and there is too much money involved to invest something you are not ape shit about. I think when the time comes, there will be another project, but for now, I am in producer mode.”-Short Kut
It was in 2001, when Short Kut started dedicating more time to producing and songwriting, and in 2003. Him and friend/artist Slick 23, founded Kut Throat Entertainment and soon after met a songstress named Shannon Howell, and starting to really break into R&B.
“Shannon & I literally wrote ‘Wait On Me’ the first day we met. That was such a powerful song, because at the time, we had both be going thru relationship issues. It was so heartfelt and sincere. Who would have known we’d be one of the first local R&B/rap duets to get consistent airplay on the radio. Hell, we even perfomed it live at a radio station. We probably did that song in over 20 shows from Indy, to Philly and in between. That’s when you know you got a hit!”
Although the 2 only recorded an EP before her departure to ATL, the buzz and recognition was priceless. Shorti had finally rooted himself as a producer and Kut Throat Entertainment was becoming more recognized.
Years, and songs later. Short Kut is currently working with biz partner Glen Williams (half of Short Kut Ent.), as well as Sharp Team Entertainment on everything from movies, to producing the next big thing. On the artist tip, Short Kut has recently tapped into the country scene, and has done collaborations with Blue River Band, which he helped secure a win in the Battle of the Bands competetion (see clip to the right, be patient, he’s at the end of the set).
“As a musician, you gotta evolve and try new things. Who would have known that my “comeback” to artistry would be with a country band? But you know what, it’s opened my eyes in ears to that genre, and there are a lot of similarities between it and rap. It’s all great music, and it feels good knowing that I helped open up rap to ears that probably didn’t appreciate it until now. I was honored to be included in such an important event, and look forward to doing more work with BRB.
