shortwave's new-wave indie-rock is smart and sexy, anthems of heartbreak and triumph that tug at the heartstrings and speak to the masses. Their cool and fervent sound (a la Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, Spoon) has impressed the expert ears of many accomplished producers. Grammy-winning producer Malcolm Burn (Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop) invited the band to record at his Catskills studio and, in a quick week of hard-work and happenstance, EP 'shortwave' was born. Pulsating dance-rock track "Esther" and contemplative ballad "Stereo" fit nicely between Kings of Leon and U2 on radio programmers' playlists.
If you've seen shortwave, you'll know their live show swagger serves them well, playing alongside Cracker and The Waking Eyes and hot gigs at the Mod Club, the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern, Lee's Palace, El Mocambo, and festival headlining spots including headlining NXNE showcases in Toronto. The band is also involved with War Child Canada and Watstock, an annual music fundraiser supporting the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Hard-working, impassioned rockers with heart.
shortwave trace their origins back to their childhood - brothers Ry (vocals/guitar) and Sager Johnson (guitar) grew up in Toronto with Devin Jannetta (drums), forming various bands and sharing stages with artists like Big Sugar, Junkhouse and SuperFriendz. It wasn't till 2004 when they brought Cary Parker (organ) into the mix and took on the moniker shortwave did things begin to happen. Two years later, they found Nic Oliverio (bass) and the group was whole.
With features in NOW, Metro Toronto, and BlogTO and airplay on CBC Radio 2, 102.1 The Edge (Toronto), and college radio, shortwave have the right elements, the right songs, and the fans to propel their burgeoning career. Shortwave is heading into the studio this summer to record their debut full-length album, slated for release in 2009.
