GeneralThrowing a sequin bedazzled spin on things. Breaking though the cobwebs and discovering all the treasures someone else forgot to sew with. Finding people to trot with to old records. Finding unusual people to dress up and take pictures of on our new couch. Going to ART shows at the NEw Image ARt GAllery.

About me:
I'm a tiny boutique in Echo Park that loves keeping strange hours... I opened on October 13th, 2000...to house friends artwork and local designers clothes. Every first SAturday the block has a street party presenting these new artists and designers. We like to carry designers whose work tells a story--and show art and objects that reflect a feminine point of view. When possible please try to include a note when trying to add us as a friend--so we know you are a real person.

Who I'd like to meet:
people who like to trick out there dull wardrobes...like wearing a cape, corsage, pompom, or a giant sequin beret. (ok maybe not that last one) Any undiscovered artists, jewelry makers or crafty designers that make things that tell an interesting tale. If you can Macrame-that's a plus. ALways looking to meet folk artists/taxidermists, weavers, knitters, flappers, performers, and costume makers. Love Edie/Grey Gardens, the Marchesa Luisa Cassati, Dare Wright, Auntie Mame, the Cockettes, girls with gaps in their teeth, the gang of Italian looking beauties in Holy Mountain.

Part 2:
LETTER FROM MADELINE VON FOERSTER

Hello everyone,

Under current copyright law, in effect for the last 30 years, your visual art is copy protected whether or not it is registered or carries the copyright symbol. This week, the U.S. House of Representatives is expected to introduce the Orphan Works Act of 2008. If you care about protecting your work, you're against it.

It will have the effect of wiping out any copyright on visual art now in existence, throwing your work into the public domain. If you wish to protect your work (each and every separate piece) you will have to digitize it and register it with private sector
registries as yet uncreated, for a fee as yet unestablished. I say registries because this bill places no limit on how many separate registries there could be.

It gets worse. Anyone can submit images, including your images. They would then be excused from any liability for infringement (also known as THEFT) unless the legitimate rights owner (you) responds within a certain period of time to grant or deny permission to use your work.

That means you will also have to look through every image in every registry all the time to make sure someone is not stealing and registering your art. You could actually end up illegally using your own artwork or photo if someone else registers it.
…………………………………………………………..
P.S. If you don't want to take Heather or Madeline's word for it, check out the huge list of Groups Opposing the Orphan Works Bills as of June 18, 2008 (the list is too long to fit in a myspace comment box)

American Society of Architectural Illustrators, Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, National Cartoonists Society, Advertising Photographers of America, Professional Women Photographers, Inc.
, Editorial Photographers of America, Society of Decorative Painters, American Association of Independent Music, National Association of Record Industry Professionals, Los Angeles Music Network, …

To the awesome, talented, and enlightened people out there

I encourage all of you to repost, blog, and pass this along to creative people you know. This affects everyone in creative industries and beyond. Painters, musicians, designers, writers, film-makers, etc. The fastest thing to do is enter your name and zip code at this link. It will let your reps know you want them to vote against it.

http://capwiz. com/illustratorspartnership/home/

I did it, it takes less than one minute. There is also a link to use on the page, for people who are concerned but do not live in the U.S. This is a historical moment in time, which will change the lives of artists and generations to come. It's disgusting if this bill gets through! What is this country coming to? The bill might get approved before summer recess! So--act right away. Let's rally. You will save yourself boatloads of heartache and money, not to mention be rewarded with good karma….you'll be loved by artists and art lovers everywhere! Please and thank you :)

Here's what I think of this bill:

Kind hearts are the gardens.. kind thoughts are the roots..
Kind words are the flowers, kind deeds are the fruits..

Take care of your garden.. and keep out the weeds..
Fill it with sunshine.. kind words & kind deeds..

Utopia / Dystopia Saturday June 14 7-11 p.m.

CLOSING RECEPTION PARTY

DIY Gallery closing reception for “Little Utopia,” a new installation by Chris Avitable, James Fish, and Mario Richeda. Combining collage, painting, sound, and sculpture furniture, the artists share a vision of Utopia / Dystopia. Drawing inspiration from literature, sci-fi movies and music, this exhibit makes an effort to redefine a contemporary vision of Utopia. In this “perfect world” functionality meets simplicity, and mutates the familiar everyday surroundings. The result is more than just perfect.
Come dream with us…if only for a little while.
