Sounds Like
Fiona Apple, Sarah Mclachlan, Massive Attack, but more edgy!!!
Shugar is Devon Loizeaux and Mike McAree. Devon and Mike have been a team for the past 4 years with Devon being the driving force behind the writing and Mike molding the production. Devon and Mike first met when she was only 16 and he- only 18. Not yet realizing what an astonishing musical beast they could create if they were to work together, it would be another 2 years before the Shugar project would be conceived, and yet another 4 years after that before it would come to fruition.
“Four years, two boys and the one that got away. . ." was primarily written by Devon. Mike is the producer, audio-engineer and rhythm guitar player for the band. (wrightwaystudios.com) Shugar has had one song on MTV. Out of thousands of women across the nation, Devon was chosen as one of three finalists in the Pantene Pro-Voice singer/songwriter competition, submitting the first song off the record, “Depends on the Day”. She had a 60 second vignette showcasing her song and promoting internet voting running on MTV, MTV2, VH1 and BET all day, every day for the month of July. Shugar is also getting airplay on XM's UNSIGNED RADIO STATION as well as WTMD here in Baltimore.
Devon started playing piano at a very young age. She would crouch at the top of the stairs of her childhood home, and ease drop on her older sister’s piano lessons. After the lesson was over she would sneak down to the Baldwin piano to simply mimic the sounds that she had heard, eventually teaching herself over 100 songs-solely by ear. Her parents’ hopes to put her in lessons were quickly shattered when the instructor spent the entire half hour of her first lesson telling Devon that her hands were in the wrong place-that she wasn’t playing correctly. Despite the disapproval, she continued to play the way she had taught herself and loved every second of it. Needless to say, the conventional lessons didn’t last very long. Singing was something that came quite naturally to most of her immediate family. Although it was in her blood, Devon didn’t realize her passion for the art until late into her middle school years-when she began her affair with vocal performance. During her junior year in high school is when she started writing her own songs, but it wasn’t until she and Mike met that the songs became what they are to this day; Soulful, honest, revealing and brimming with raw emotion.
Mike began his musical journey at the age of 14- when he picked up his first guitar. He soon found himself playing full-out metal in a “hardcore” rock band well into his twenties. He and his band, (Torn Apart) did three U.S tours and released 5 recordings over a span of 6 years. He eventually transitioned into audio engineering and production which he has now made his career, making quite a name for himself here on the east coast.
Shugar is a band looking to plant their feet as something new in music- drawing off old and new influences to create an interesting yet familiar sound. They hope to get their music heard by people across the nation and to begin working on their second record while still pushing the first. ***If anyone would like to purchase a Shugar CD you can get it online at www.CDbaby.com/shugar - For updates check the website shugarmusic.com (it's under construction @ the moment, but will be up and running soon.)
