Where do you live?
Simi Valley, CA. About 30 minutes outside Hollywood
What equipment do you use?
I currently use a Canon Rebel XT (Digital) with 50mm prime canon lens and the 18-55mm kit lens.
When did you start photography, and why?
I've always been interested in art and started painting when I was very young, living with my grandparents. I started photography at the age of 16. My parents gave me a small digital camera that I would ditch school and use to shoot pictures of my friend. When I noticed deviantART.com and how amazing the photographs were on there it inspired me to want to do the same.
What equipment did you start out with?
It was a small compact no name 1 megapixel camera, the quality was terrible. My dad gave me his old Minolta and my grandfather gave another one that I used for quite some time. For a bit I shot with a Sony cybershot, but the quality was really bad. My boyfriend gave me a Canon rebel T2 in 2006 and in 2008 I bought a used Canon Rebel XT from a friend.
Who are your models?
I mainly work with TFP models on my projects and more creative work, I help create the models ideas for their own portfolio in exchange for my own ideas.
My earlier work was self-portraiture and friends. I currently shoot for a website called Zivity.
I don't see much of your self-portraiture nowadays, why is this?
I rarely have the time anymore. Self-portraiture is extremely hard and it involves a lot of guess work, it's time consuming and a real let down if you don't obtain the picture you were hoping for. I started out doing self-portraiture because I wanted to experiment with my cameras and often times didn't have a model readily available to me. I mostly take self portraits now when I can't sleep at night.
How do you take photographs of yourself?
I use set up my camera on a tripod and use a self timer.
Do you use Photoshop?
Yes. I use photoshop CS4, creative suite cs3, and lightroom2. I just got a wacom tablet, which is really nice and helpful.

Where do you get your ideas?
Honestly, no idea. I get inspired by locations, other photographers, models, neat wardrobe that I find. Anything really.
Do you do anything else besides photography?
I am a supervisor in a local Coffee House. I've been making coffee for about 6 years now and it's something I really enjoy. I plan on owning my own coffee house someday.
What does "Shurie" mean?
I get this question a lot and don't really understand why. It's my first name. It was given to me at birth and is fairly uncommon so I use it on it's own a lot. Sometimes I go by Shurie Jenai, which is my first and middle name. But I almost never use my last name.
What camera should I buy? Or what camera do you recommend?
It's hard for me to say what camera I recommend because I don't know you as a person. Each camera suits different people, but if you're going to go for something go for either Canon or Nikon and a start SLR, it will set you back a bit in price but it's worth it.
Can I use your work for my blog/website/myspace etc?
As long as I'm credited with a direct link back to my myspace, facebook, blog, flickr, zivity, etc. Any use of my works at all for another work MUST give credit and I expect high resolution copies for my own portfolio use in return.
Do you travel for shoots?
Money is a problem for most photographers starting out. If the travel fees are paid (ie. hotels, transportation, food, etc), than I am more than willing to travel, assuming my schedule permits it. Of course, the cost of the shoot would also need to be paid.
Do you do the make up too?
I can, however I have a makeup artist that I work with on a regular basis. Her name is Dana and she does hair for the models too. If Dana isn't available, it's often the model who does her own makeup, but I am willing an capable if the model doesn't want to do her own.
What about the clothes/styling?
I mainly do the styling. The clothes are provided from either my photographic wardrobe or the models clothes. I have quite an extensive collection at this point.
Can you critique/comment my work?
I don't really like too, but if you shoot me a message and are willing to wait a little bit, I'll get back to you when I can.

Do you shoot men?
I can, but since I don't get paid to shoot men, I prefer not to. I always except paying clients, though.
Do you sell prints? Where can I buy your work for my home?
Yes, I am willing to print up to five prints of each of my works on Flickr. I will not print anymore than 5 of any image, ever. This means if I've sold 3 prints, there are only 2 available to you. I do frame and ship to anywhere.
Can I license your work?
Yes, my work is available for image licensing but you will need to contact me with details of what it will be used for, I will then send you an estimated price and a small contract for you to fill in.

I'm a photographer from the Simi Valley, CA.
I am mainly self taught at photography (I started experimenting with photography at the age of sixteen)
I use Canon cameras & canon lenses, prefer to use natural lighting and most of my work is naturally lit but I have experience with both natural and studio environments.
