Change is coming. Shy of the Depth are a 5 piece uk tech metal band.
There debut e.p. (recorded with Dan Weller and Justin Hill of wellerhill productions) was release september 2007 through basick records. Although the band's time together so far has been short they have achieved a lot in that time and plan to continue that trend into the future, currently writing there debut album with plans to release late 2009. keep your eyes peeled.
Combining tech metal ferociousness with solid, straight ahead metal that will appeal to fans of meshuggah and lamb of god, these brighton bruisers are guaranteed to give you neck ache. excellently crafted and executed with crunching production courtesy of those ex-sikth boys Justin Hill and Dan Weller, shy of the depth ensure that their potential so far has been reached. with threats of a full length being recorded in 09, the next time you see this name being advertised at your local venue make sure you dont miss this five-piece. Winding guitar riff's and solos, harsh vocals and a melody throughout that is both zaney and very impressive. It's great to see some young UK bands making a name for themselves in this vastly overswamped scene, and Shy Of The Depth have the imagination, creativity and talent to make a big future for themselves.

Polyrythyms fly everywhere whilst the bass slaps and pops in all the right places, underpinning the groove that nails the seizure like guitar lines solidly to the rest of the tracks. The musicianship on show from all five members is undeniably awesome and shows why Justin Hill and Dan Weller (ex-Sikth) personally invited them to the WellerHill Production complex to record this EP. All round awesomeness 8/10 - dieshellsuitdie
You could try playing air guitar here and would probably end up tying yourself in knots. The even further frenzied approach of ‘Unborn Menace’ with vocals virtually rapped out to keep up the pace has the roundabout on full spin, the musical equivalent of sticking your head in a blender.any music that can unbalance the senses enough to inspire vomiting can only be commended. pete woods -MTUK
The CD features the Brighton based five-piece showing their teeth with a malicious style of complex structures and virtuosic instrumentation, while vocalist 'Eddy-B' fronts the band with alternating screeches and growls. Throughout the record Shy of the Depth exercise a vast multitude of riffs and licks, ranging from the sporadic thrashy-stylings of Sikth and Between The Buried And Me, to the mechanical rhythmic patterns of Meshuggah and Oceansize, and prove that they can pull all it off with discipline and good musicianship.

Even with just four tracks, the band show a great deal of versatility which will undoubtedly be explored in future releases in order for them to create a unique style of their own.

In places, Brighton’s Shy Of The Depth sound like a hardnut version of Architects, with tech guitar riffs, interesting time signatures and brain melting bass shredding. The vocals are something even Phil Anselmo would be proud of, and are set out in such a way which doesn’t come across as a constant wall of screaming teenagers, something many UK metal bands have yet to master. The guys mix a sludgy trashy sound with back breaking guitar riffs and breakdowns so heavy they might crush your eardrums, accompanied with harmonised guitars and dirty bass tones. The 4 track EP flows expertly, going from strength to strength, showing versatility between songs and exceptional talent, darting between the kinds of sounds you’d usually associate with Blacklisted, Mastodon, or even more thrashy bands such as Municipal Waste. This is a strong debut, and with time there’s no reason why they can’t own the UK scene.
