Tom Guard was born in Redwood City California. He has been performing and teaching guitar, bass and harmonica since his teens. His musical family has shared with him a range of folk, blues, jazz, rock and fusion. In 1962 after his father’s run with the Kingston Trio the family moved to Sydney, Australia. His mother, Gretchen took a break from Stanford to raise what was soon three kids. Dave, his father hosted a television show and wrote a book called Colour Guitar. Tom says, “In 1967, due to missing home and Mom’s need to complete her art degree, we returned to the states. I learned music and art from my folks and later received a BFA in film from the San Francisco Art Institute.” In the eighties and nineties he operated a silk-screening business, became a parent and entered the multimedia and web authoring field.
A move to the New England area in 2001 introduced him to a wide range of talented professionals that helped to expand his musical horizons. While teaching at North Attleboro’s White’s Music Education Center he was offered by his student, Dan Kappeler studio time nearby and soon found himself wearing a song writer hat. He met the project’s engineer, and drummer on six songs, Peter Rubbo of R Productions in Bridgewater and, for the next four years, wrote and recorded Shy River’s thirteen songs. "With life always getting in the way, time was running out" he says, "so I began farming out work to studios near and far. Drums were also recorded and performed by George Dussault at his Galilee Productions in Cumberland, RI. Tom built a home studio which he considered adequate after a great session with Attleboro’s Andy Solberg who plays guitar and fiddle. A group of bagpipe tracks played by Tom’s neighbor, Rory MacEarchern on Syd Barrett’s See Emily Play was another highlight of the home recordings. "Rory has since joined the Marine Corps five years active duty" says Tom sighing, "I was hoping he could be the show stopper for the live act. Do you play the pipes?"

H. Jackson Brown: Good character is more to be praised than outstanding talent. Most talents are, to some extent, a gift. Good character, by contrast, is not given to us. We have to build it, piece by piece -- by thought, choice, courage, and determination.

Hi Tom! You know Björn Ulveus, the other guy in Abba started his career in a group called The Hotenanny Singers who were very inspired by Kingston Trio. As was I.
Hi Tom. Thanks for the add. I listened to your music. Liked it a lot. As I've been playing with horses I found the video awesome. The song too of course. Sincerely Mats in Sweden
