Sibel Tüzün

Bio:

Sibel has always been keen on music and performance, starting out in the TRT (Turkish State Broadcasting Corporation) Radio Istanbul children’s chorus, then moving on to the youth chorus. While at high school, Sibel’s band entered and was placed in the top three of a country-wide competition open to all secondary schools in Turkey. This experience introduced her to Melih Kibar, one of Turkey’s best-loved songwriters and composers and the opportunity to work with some of the country’s most successful popular musicians and entertainers, such as Ajda Pekkan, Nukhet Duru and Erol Evgin, doing the vocals on advertisements and backing tracks.

1988 saw Sibel’s acceptance into Istanbul University State Conservatory, where she specialised in vocal studies and opera. Alongside her classical training, she continued to develop her vocal style in both jazz and pop. In 1991, she chose to pursue a full-time career in popular music. Early successes in widely publicised competitions such as the TRT Altin Anten (Golden Aerial) and Kusadasi Altin Guvercin (Golden Dove) gained Sibel recognition as a solo artist, and led to a recording contract with RAKS Music Productions. Her first album, "AH BIZ KIZLAR" (Us Girls) enjoyed wide success, partly due to the collaboration of established song-writers, but also because of Sibel’s fresh vocal approach. Three songs from the album became hit singles; building on this recording success, she began touring in earnest and spent the next two years performing to audiences in Turkey and throughout Europe.

Seeking to extend her range, Sibel spent four months in London with Robert Bricknell, developing her voice, as preparation for work on her second album with RAKS. "NEFES KESER ASKLAR" (In Love, Breathless) equalled Us Girls, with several tracks making it as hit singles. In 1997, she toured again in Europe, before founding her own production company Arinna Music.

The following year, Sibel released a further album "HAYAT BUYSA BEN YOKUM BU YOLDA" (If This is Life, Count Me Out), featuring eight tracks with her lyrics. Producing the album herself cemented her reputation as a performing artist of substance. The video clip of the title track, directed by Charles Richards, was shown on French music channel MCM, and warmly received by a new audience. An album "YINE YALNIZIM" with Bay Muzik followed, then a return to her own Arinna Music. In 2003, she released "KIRMIZI" (Red). The title track was an instant hit and the album enjoyed healthy sales, then the publication of its songbook.

Real life intervened, and Sibel suspended her musical activities for a year to concentrate on her baby daughter Elaya.

In September 2005, Sibel returned with another first: a single "SEVIYORUM SEVECEGIM" released on the internet for mp3 download.

Soon afterwards, she accepted her country’s nomination to appear at the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest in Athens.

Since then, she has been involved in various projects, including a contract with Avrupa Muzik, which led to the release of a single named "AC TELEFONU" which went straight to number one in the digital charts.

Sibel is now exploring new musical areas, including a jazz collaboration, following an invitation to open the 2008 Alanya Jazz Festival.
