Jean Erasmus has been writing songs as a hobby for some years after being inspired by his friend Rob Jenkins from Furneaux. For a while, Jean and his sister Nacia – vocalist, performing artist and vocal arranger – had some fun with the compositions; performing and recording a few songs, until they realised that it actually sounded pretty good.
They decided to record an album, but with the exception of doing everything themselves as both of them have a strong belief in independence from corporate key players.
Some months passed – Jean working in the UK as a medical practitioner, Nacia as performing artist in South Africa – saving up, and acquiring the equipment and skills to achieve their goal.
In December 2005, they set up their own home studio in South Africa, with a whole 6 weeks of sixteen hour days following; arranging and recording eight songs. Jean flew back to the UK in February to resume his duties as medical practitioner, and to sequence and mix the songs in his spare time. Unfortunately, the main PC (carrying the bulk of the work) was broken in transit by the baggage handlers, and most of the sequencing was lost.
A year followed, with Jean piecing back together the work, and it was in September 2006 that Nacia and Jean wrote ‘Fool’, following a re-recording session in December 2006.
The album (now comprising of nine songs) – completely self written, produced, recorded, arranged and mixed - were then mastered by Tim Turan in the UK, and Sibling Tide was born.
