Coen van der Horst started playing guitar and writing songs when he was already 19 years old. And with a good reason. Coen: “You could say I was never really ‘into’ music. A real Top 40 listener, if you will. Until the turning point: in one summer, I was introduced to both The Beatles and Oasis.” He starts laughing. “That turned out to be very, very contagious!”
Still, it took a while before he started recording songs and had the guts to play shows. “I respectfully denied invitations for playing gigs – I was way too nervous! But right before I left for the US in 2004 for an internship, I recorded a 3-song demo. I thought it was nice to bring along, I didn’t expect anything to happen.” He thought wrong. Once he was there, he let slip he “sometimes wrote songs” and was thus booked for a couple of acoustic gigs. And with success. “The audiences were very enthusiastic so it was really cool. And if that wasn’t enough, I was in the paper the next day! My very first gig ever and there I was, in print!”
That alone was enough motivation to keep going. Once back home, he recorded a couple of demos with guest musicians, as well as a single with his then band in the beginning of 2009: This Better Be For Real. “That was a lot of fun to do, as well as a great learning experience, spending two days tinkering on just one song. And it was then that I realized that I had spent all those years doing everything very quickly. And with the results to match it. So that’s what I want to do right now: take my time recording a debut album. I seriously cannot wait and have a lot of ideas racing through my head!”
In the meantime, the small group of fans waiting for new music can write some shows down in their agendas. But the album, that’s where Coen will take his time. Maybe not the announcement people are waiting for, but if you think about it, kind of appropriate for a guy who started late with music…
