Something dark, twisted and demented has been brewing in Phoenix, AZ since 2003. Crawling, clawing its way across the country like a vampiric creature, leaving a trail of cult-like followers in its wake. A turbulent, menacing style of music that combines elements of punk, metal and goth-rock from the scene's most promising band, Sigma. With the brand new release of the group's third full length album, Buried in Black and White out November 2008, the hardest working band in the scene finds themselves in a dark place, reconnecting with their passion for music through tragic tales of loss and despair.
Conceived by Keith Wallace and Jon Kabir, Sigma was formed in the fall of 2003 in an attempt to create a style of music that not only rocked but also explored the beauty within darkness. After finding fellow musicians who shared their vision, Keith, Jon and crew recorded their debut full length, Stars and Fights released February 2004, which quickly helped the band amass a strong following throughout Arizona. The band went back into the studio and released their second full length Violence Speaks Louder Than Words in May 2006, Sigma released all 3 full lengths on their own label Shadows Cast Records distributed by IODA. In 2008 long time friend and band member Jeff Harder left the band to get a degree in music recording, Sigma immediattely recruited another friend Chris Griswold (guitars) and Clayton Graham (drums). Thus, rounding the band out to a more rich, powerful sounding four piece.
Sigma’s exceptional style of dark punk rock and DIY work ethic is complimented by the band's remarkable live shows. For the past 5 years the band has toured with and opened for many important bands such as The Misfits, Agnostic Front, Mad Caddies, Avenged Sevenfold, Job for a Cowboy, The Adolescents, Plain White T’s, Vans Warped Tour and the list goes on. The band's tight sets of intensely passionate performances have won over fans from all over.
In November 2008 Sigma unveiled their latest album, Buried In Black and White - thirteen tumultuous tracks of dark rock. Combining sharp metallic riffs and soaring melodic choruses with tragic lyrics, Buried In Black and White is a non-stop torrent of brooding passion-fueled rock with immediate accessibility. With this new release, Sigma has a reenergized drive which translates to their most matured and heaviest effort yet.
"We went through a lot over the past couple years. Matters that really opened our eyes. This time, we got very personal" says the inimitable bassist Jon Kabir. "I think many bands today try to write music to produce a certain sound and to attract a certain audience. We did the same thing too. This time Keith and I decided to take a different approach. We wanted to just write whatever comes to our hearts and minds. Not what we think people will like but what we like. We grew up listening to Nirvana, Metallica, Fugazi, Pantera, Smashing Pumpkins, AFI, Misfits, and a lot more. Many different genres and sounds. All of these bands have influenced us in our song writing. "
No matter what musical palette the listener may possess. There is definitely something for everyone, mainstream and underground alike, on this album. From the mellow acoustic and instrumental passages, to ferocious punk-metal riffs, catchy melodic pop, and throwbacks to vintage rock and 80’s hair metal, all held together with a creative industrial undertone. This piece of musical art delivers song after song of heart pounding, edge of your seat listening.
Blending fantasy and reality through twisted tales of death and tragedy, Keith and Jon revel in the quest to show the world the beauty inside a body covered in blood, bullet holes and stab wounds. With songs like the massive anthem "Your Thoughts, My Scars, Our Reasons" the ode to the lover "Porcelain Doll" the heart wrenching tale of "Orchids" to the doom that surrounds the beauty in “The Nightmare Begins”. Buried In Black and White is a stake in the heart of safe, conformed music, confirming their place among the scenes most elite bands. Sigma is Arizona’s best kept secret.
