when decadence begat boredom the 80s flapped once, flapped twice and, like a butterfly whose wings have been caressed too many times, fell to the earth black as a beetle. with horns, worn in rage and showcased as ornaments, the 90s tracked its anger and bleakness in a slow mating dance with cool through every high school in townand then new years eve 2000. the night the world ended and jesus came back and took everyone but the cynics with him.

well here we are in the first decade since the collapse. wethose who dared to choose life instead of death (no matter how enticing the commercial made it look). wewho while digging through the ruins of mankind discovered punk and jazz and rock and gypsy. wethose who have finally been given the chance to name ourselves. weve grabbed drums and strings and dust and fire and the very air in our lungs and built a banner declaring that the distant outline of a city seen through smog really is a ghost.

its not enough that we remember making the machines that made the machines that created us. deeper. its in the clothes that we wear. deeper. its in the food that we eat. deeper. its in that first cry of identity when the placenta in our lungs was displaced with air. its the mantra we crystallized and broke in that breath:
silence is treason.

After last night's lecture, someone commented to me that I must be an army brat because I had such fantastic teeth. Such teeth, he said, could only be the result of good breeding and access to the finest dental care. I explained that though I descend from a long line of Bulgarian nobility, when I was a boy people were still having infected teeth removed by a donkey tied to a rope. Happenstance, I explained to him, is the main reason behind Mustafio's distinguished countenance.

I am taking a collection up for a new boat. First, I need a crew. I am starting small with a cabin-boy and a mid-shipman. All the life jackets will be hand-knit from the webs of real spiders, which I am currently compacting for a dense body feel. Some of you may come with me on my proposed June voyage. We'll see who makes it to the top of the list.
