BIO
Silent Shadow is the brainchild of Brisbane based producer and multi-instrumentalist Cameron Swales. Drawing influence from such slamming drum'n'bass acts as Noisia and Concord Dawn and fusing that sound with rock, progressive and even classical influences, the SS sound is a raw take on neuro-funk fuelled by sledgehammer synth lines yet still retaining a strong melodic focus. Since they smashed their way into the Brisbane club consciousness as a live unit in March 2007 their sound has become even more diverse, with passages of atmospheric liquid, dubstep and even metal-flavoured hip hop sprinkled through live performances which flow like a DJ set, the ultimate goal being to present a seamless hour of music which flies in the face of the one-track-at-a-time mentality of live band culture.
In the live setting he is joined on the drum kit by brother Kris-Ko, a progressive house DJ/producer in his own right whose previous act D-Ko set dancefloors alight at clubs and festivals through the early noughtis with their genre-smashing mix of breaks, dub and tribal house. The floating live collective now sees vibe enhancer JP - best known in Brisbane for his crowd hype at the legendary Rude Bwoyz Monthly and now man on the mic for Sydney's Foreign Dub Crew at their legendary DnBBQ nights - bring his unparalleled mic skills to the party, while Dave Dri of progressive tech production unit Segue has also been known to bring his arsenal of synths, samplers and bass faces on stage. With such a wealth of experience on board it’s hardly surprising that the trio has quickly become one of Brisbane’s most in demand live dance acts – and indeed the only live drum’n’bass show in town.
It's been two years now since Silent Shadow made the giant leap from the studio into the live arena, but in that time they have already smashed dancefloors at events like the massive Parklife festival, DnBBQ (in Sydney and Byron Bay), Junglettes, Rukus, Phat Albeats and Roll Deeper, racking up support slots for Concord Dawn, Spor & Ewun, Benga, Skream, Pitch Black, Big Bud, Silent Witness, Black Sun Empire, Kobra Kai, Antiform and K-O along the way.
Early 2009 has seen them put live performance on hold as they call on Brisbane drum’n’bass don Operon (Covert Operations, Golden Orb Records, Mind Influence Recordings) to put the finishing touches on their first official demo recordings, a process which also produced the collaborative early morning atmospheric gem ‘Science’. Now it’s time to perfect a live show which will have more than just the band themselves gasping for breath before the year is out.
