SILKSF015 GORM SØRENSEN :: Harmonic Aspects
Gorm Sorensen (a.k.a. Airillusions), who also manages the Silk Sofa imprint, has graced us with another lush and impressionistic sampling of his latest ambient tunes. It has been quite a year for Gorm, who not only has received DJ support from the likes of Markus Schulz, but also recently remixed for Vandit Digital. On "Before The Last Snow Disappeared," Gorm has discarded the painter's brush and utilized, instead, the classical strokes of piano and violin to depict a wondrous winter landscape. This particular piece is also guided forth by a gentle breakbeat. "Beyond" showcases Gorm's standard weapon of choice in the studio, a grand piano, as delicate melodies are layered upon a hypnotic arpeggio. Dark strings give this track additional emotional weight, ultimately crescendoing into a massive score. The closing track, "Twilight Thoughts," once again features Gorm's brilliant piano skills, backed by a soft breakbeat and tom rhythm. Yet, the most prominent instrument here is the uplifting flute-based pads, which give the track extra lift and keep the 'thoughts' on an elevated plateau.

SILKSF014 MAX GUELI :: Drop's Destiny
Italian producer Max Gueli, well known for his work with Frisky and Coldharbour, is the latest addition to the Silk Sofa roster. The title track, "Drop's Destiny", begins with soothing, sweeping pads and arpeggiated melodies; a subtle bassline emerges underneath soon thereafter. The main melody has its peak moment, while the panned percussion elements create an enjoyable and steady rhythm to support the wealth of pad layers. "Into The New" comes next, and a unique and hypnotizing groove is quickly established. A break beat with prominent percussion elements is introduced, and once again Max Gueli adds many interesting and varied pad sounds and melodies. Finalizing this EP is "In Your Eyes", which quickly establishes a lovely soundscape, with a very fine background atmosphere and a strong melody line above.

SILKSF013 MICHAEL WITNESS :: Crystal Night
Russian artist Michael Witness is a Silk veteran, who most recently remixed Jason Bradberry's acclaimed release "Autumn". This EP, entitled "Crystal Nights", features two originals and three remixes. Unique panned drum effects and a lovely chilled atmosphere introduce the title track, “Crystal Night”, followed by a breakbeat with subtle piano stabs. A delayed pluck theme takes over later on, and hereby enhances the melodic levels of the track. Smooth pad lines and mesmerizing sound effects introduce the original mix of "18 Days", and the lush atmosphere extends throughout the track. A great, chilled beat with crisp percussion lines appears later on, and even more sweeping pad lines are placed in the mix to help build the energy. First remix of "Crystal Night" is from Hugo Gerritse from the Netherlands; the track leads with a strong break beat with lush background melodies and effects, and very smooth pad lines gradually appear underneath. Deep rhodes stabs also make their entrance, resulting in a stunning blend of melodies. Russian producer Domestic Technology (better known as Silk veteran Invisible Sounds), delivers a deep house remix of "Crystal Night" with lots of fascinating instruments and melodies. A frisky trumpet, in particular, works quite well with the rhodes stabs and bassline. Furthermore, many new percussion lines are added to enhance the funkiness of the track. Finalizing this package, we have a remix of "18 Days" by Parisian artist Faskil, whose beat and bassline provide a groovy and progressive take on the original. Various small effects around the track create an interesting and enjoyable soundscape, as well as the additional melodies and tweaks of the percussion elements.

SILKSF012 EVREN ULUSOY :: Satin Hearts
Turkish producer Evren Ulusoy returns to Silk Sofa with the romantically titled “Satin Hearts” EP. Since we last heard from Evren ("Vessel" on Sofa Sampler 1), he has continued to garner attention with releases on the well-respected imprints Balkan Connection and Proton Particles. Deep, mesmerizing pads introduce the first track (“Lilies”), and a chilled house atmosphere soon takes hold. As new synths and melodies are introduced, the track evolves into a large, melodic piece with lots of variations. “Satin Hearts” goes down a more progressive, yet nonetheless deep route: the bassline is textbook for the genre, and regular pad sweeps, in addition to varied melodies, keep the listener completely absorbed. The final track, “Tulips”, is yet another deep journey by Evren. The lovely pluck sounds and atmospheric stabs create a unique soundscape, only enhanced by the rhythm section.

SILKSF011 JASON BRADBERRY :: Horizons [remixes]
With the recent release of Jason Bradberry's Horizons EP on Silk Digital, Sofa has followed suit with a trio of remixes. On the first, Dutch producer Exoplanet, who was last seen on Sofa's Sampler 1 with "Stasis", has crafted an outer-wordly soundscape. The darker tones of "Autumn" are explored here, as distant echoes and gurgling effects evoke the image of a cavernous, lonesome planet. Gorm Sorensen, in the midst of a breakthrough year (including a remix on Vandit Digital) has painted a much brighter picture, with his deeply moving remix of "Lost". With gentle strokes of the piano, as well as the romantic strings, Gorm has once again seamlessly blended his classical influences with modern production techniques. Finally, Gridlocked, the man behind one of Sofa's most acclaimed releases ("Balancing Act"), has returned with a remix that blends influence ranging from down-tempo to hip-hop. In the first half of his "Seven Days" mix, a shifty, stutter rhythm is punctuated by newly added piano chords and cuts of the original vocals. As the track continues to build momentum, "breathy" textural effects also come into play, as well as some of the original arp lines, capping off this masterful interpretation.

SILKSF010 MIKE EFEX :: Mohito
For it's definitive tenth release, Silk Sofa has called upon one of it's most esteemed and versatile veterans, Mike EFEX (Armada, Perfecto, Neuroscience) for a new downtempo EP. His Mohito Original Mix begins with a chilled, submerged-in-the-sea vibe, soon joined by hypnotic female (stutter) vox, worthy of the mythological Sirens. Gentle breaks and a light side piano melody further guide the track along, though at a relaxed, "mojito-sipping" pace. Hungarian producer Styler Steel, who last appeared on Silk Sofa's Sampler 1 with "Deep Blue Sky", provides a housier kick, while still retaining the textural elements of the original. Mike EFEX's second original track, "Too Dimensional," is classic drum 'n bass, drawing from such obvious inspirations as LTJ Bukem. Although the atmospheric touches are similar to the first track on the package, "Too Dimensional" is a much jazzier number, including a repeating saxophone riff. Styler Steel returns again to provide his signature downtempo house facelift to the original - organ stabs and drifting pads provide further atmosphere, while the saxophone is given solo treatment in the break.
