Silvana uses familiar images, charismatic and nostalgic figures, to show us the contradictions of human spirit, that can be soft and cruel at the same time. Techniques: The artist paints, sews, cuts, glues, digitalizes, creates videos and music... In Silvana..s artwork, the choices of media and technique aren..t automatic since they are, as well as the subjects, tools for expression.
Silvana Mello was born in Porto Alegre, the Brazilian's southest metropolis. Today , she lives in São Paulo.
She hadn't a formal education in fine arts, she learned to paint, to draw and to use a lot of technics and materials from her own experiences.
In Silvana Mello’s work, the technics are used to communicate feelings. She can chose enamel painting on tiles to express the comfort of home or to carves a skateboard (deck) and make woodprints to express the aggressiveness of urban life. In the same way, she can do embroidered canvas or silk, sew dolls, does assemblages, collages, video installations or a simple painted canvas in conservative style.
Her imagery is influenced by retro 50’s advertisement and she explores the irony of that fake happiness.
Other influences: Frank Kozik; Arthur Bispo do Rosário, Mexican and Portuguese tiles, 50's magazines illustrations.
