Music
I like everything, ranging from trip-hop, electronic, and dance to bluegrass, classical, and metal. I listen locally as well as mainstream, and I have a thing for pianos and violins. Well-done electronic music gets me every time, as well as most things that are complex, well-composed, and just plain different.
Movies
Nina's Heavenly Delights, Wristcutters: A Love Story, Across the Universe, Dancing at the Blue Iguana, Conversations with Other Women, The Gymnast, Dreamgirls, Shortbus, The Science of Sleep, Stranger Than Fiction, The Fountain, Henry and June, Moulin Rouge, Shakespeare in Love, Army of Darkness, Barbarella, Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail, Kissing Jessica Stein, Bound, Gia, Labyrinth, Willow, Frida, The Life Aquatic, Amelie, Secretary, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Young Frankenstein, The Producers (the old one, also most things with Gene Wilder OR Madeline Kahn) and V for Vendetta. I'm also a big fan of spy movies, lesbian flicks, zombie and vampire extravaganzas, fantasy sagas (even if they are horribly campy and sucky) spastic animes, (ditto) music-oriented, and/or David Lynch films.
Television
I'm embarrassed by the things I watch on T.V. I buy DVD boxed sets and veg out on YouTube, secretly rotting my brain away.
Books
Ridiculous amounts of erotica and erotica authors, The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron, Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg, Harry Potter, of course. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith, Middlesex by Jeffery Eugenides, Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, Anais Nin's diaries + erotica, Kim Harrison novels, Fun Home by Alison Bechdel, The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley, Sappho's Leap by Erica Jong, Tithe by Holly Black, anything by Francesca Lia Block, Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan, Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson, Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters, Strangers in Paradise by Terry Moore, graphic novels by Adrian Tomine, Love and Rockets series by the Hernandez Bros., most things by Alice Hoffman, most things by Daphne Gottlieb, Sarah Katherine Lewis, Michelle Tea, Amy Bloom, Pablo Neruda, Anne Sexton, Virginia Woolf, e.e. cummings.
Heroes
Any person who has overcome great odds, is passionately artistic, defies convention, is a healer, roots for the underdog and has made a contribution to the greater good of humanity. Lately I've been impressed by artists who manage to contain their own egos. It's a rare, beautiful thing.
Who I'd like to meet: The brazenly creative, the piercingly truthful, those thirsty and ravenous for life and all it has to offer.
"All considerations of language, of ideas, of symbols and metaphors serve only one function: to convey the soul of a living being to the soul of other living beings and in that process break us out of our isolation and loneliness and put us in touch with the universal spirit." -- Floyd Salas
