ENGLISH BIOGRAPHY
Silvio Rodríguez Domínguez is a Cuban musician, and a leader of the nueva trova movement. He is known for his highly symbolic lyrics. Many of his songs have become classics in Latin American music, such as Ojalá, Playa Girón and La maza. Silvio is well known for socially critically, yet ambiguous lyrics, which have raised the suspicions of both the Cuban government and Cuban-American groups on various occasions.
Silvio was born on November 29, 1946 in San Antonio de los Baños, a fertile valley in Havana Province known for its tobacco crop. He was raised in a family of poor farmers. His grandfather, a tobacco farmer, knew José Martí. His father, Víctor Dagoberto Rodríguez Ortega, was a farmer who supported socialist causes. His mother, Argelia Domínguez León, was a hairdresser. On many occasions Silvio has spoken how his love of music was developed by his mother, who would pass time singing boleros and songs from Santiago. Although Silvio had an uncle who played the bass, his mother had a far greater influence. Later, she also collaborated with Silvio on a few musical works.
Critics suggest that his lyrics have lost the questioning nature so praised by bohemians and many university students, when he would criticize the oppression of the governments, and that with his new social status as an Cuban social and political figure, his lyrics turned existentialist and obscure.
In 2003, Silvio was elected to the National Assembly of People's Power, the Cuban parliament.

Silvio Rodríguez, por parte de padre, y Domínguez, por parte de madre, nace un 29 de noviembre de 1946 en San Antonio de los Baños, un pueblo ubicado en un valle muy fértil en La Habana y zona fundamentalmente tabacalera, en el seno de una familia campesina. Su abuelo fue tabaquero y conoció a José Martí, cuando Silvio tan sólo tenia 12 años. Su padre, Víctor Dagoberto Rodríguez Ortega, fue campesino, y siempre fue un hombre liberal y de ideas socialistas. Su madre, Argelia Domínguez León, fue peluquera. Silvio ha manifestado en diversas ocasiones que su afición por la música le viene por parte de su madre, que se pasaba el día cantando boleros y sones santiagueros. Silvio tuvo un tío que tocaba el bajo pero, desde el punto de vista musical, fue su madre la que le dormía con canciones de la trova, se bañaba con danzones, barría con boleros y cocinaba con sones. Su madre debió ser música por vocación, y de hecho ha colaborado esporádicamente con Silvio en algunos trabajos.

Fue empleado de la televisión cubana y trabajó con el grupo de experimentación sonora del ICAIC (Instituto Cubano de las Artes y de la Industria Cinematográfica), donde grabó sus primeros discos y canciones. Empezó a escribir poemas a los siete u ocho años. En la revista «Mella» dibujaba una historieta que se llamaba «El Hueco», una historia muy profunda, con textos de Norberto Fuentes. Cuando trabajaba allí, aprendió los primeros acordes de guitarra con su compañero Lázaro Fundora.
A los 16 años recomenzó los estudios de piano, pero tuvo que volver a dejarlos cuando, el 4 de marzo de 1964, fue llamado al Servicio Militar Obligatorio -SMO-, de las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias -FAR-. Silvio partió rumbo a la región más occidental del país. Tenía 17 años cuando le enviaron primero a una unidad en Pinar del Río durante tres meses. Después desarrolló un primer periodo de doce semanas de entrenamiento en la Unidad 3234, de Infantería, en Artemisa, y fue trasladado a la Unidad 1087, de Servicios de Retaguardia del Ejército Occidental. Posteriormente, ubicado en la 2107, de Comunicaciones, en El Calvario, el recibió un curso de Telegrafía y desarrolló la labor de ayudante del operador de radio.
SIlvio Rodriguez y Pablo Milanés.Entonces se compró una guitarra. En el ejército conoció a Esteban Baños, con quien aprendió mucho de la guitarra. A partir de ese momento, no abandonaría más el instrumento. En todo ese tiempo nunca dejó de escribir poemas y compuso algunos relatos. Entre 1964 y 1965 compuso sus primeras canciones. En 1967 debutó en el programa de televisión Música y Estrellas, vestido con sus botas militares que, según aclaró mas tarde, era lo único que tenia para ponerse. Su primera actuación fue en el Museo de Bellas Artes. Por esa época hizo dúo con Luis López, cantaban sus canciones y se presentaron en dos ocasiones a festivales de Aficionados de la FAR. No resultaron premiados, pero fueron felicitados. En 1975, cuando llevaba ocho años de profesional y había compuesto cientos de canciones, hace su primer disco en solitario, Días y Flores.
Su influencia sobre toda una generación, junto a sus compañeros de La Nueva Trova Cubana, también conocida como Movimiento de la Nueva Trova ha sido reconocida en todo el mundo, incluso por quienes no están de acuerdo con sus ideas políticas. Queda patente que el genio de Silvio es capaz de atraer a quien él quiere y a quien no. Ha colaborado con muchos cantantes y músicos de todo el mundo.
