Since 1994, though, Congolese musician Seraphin Makagila has found St.Petersburg fertile ground for what he calls “Afro-Positive” sound. The initial idea of forming a band grew out of a student gathering 18 years ago. Makagila and his friends formed group intending to provide music for St.Petersburg’s African emigrants only. But the band was soon welcomed in the city’s underground punk and folk scene.
Since 1993-2003 Seraphin is the irreplaceable participant of famous Russian group Markscheider Kunst”.
In 2003 Makagila formed Simba Vibration to bring forward the edgier aspects of what he describes as “the new 70’s sound and philosophy of Zairan youth, heard in the music of Zaiko Langa Langa, Papa Wemba, Lita Bembo and Pepe Kale. A key to this sound is the frenetic guitar associated with much of post 70’s Zairan Congo music with its joyous lilt of highlife rhythm. Adding to these signatures of West African music, Makagila’s voice carries more Eastern Africa influences, including echoes of Burundi Rwanda and Tanzania. Makagila attributes his Pan-African orientation to childhood family trips to East Africa’s Great Lakes where he says “hearing and seeing the melodies of the different dialect, way of performance, extravagant costumes and dances marked me for life”.
The Simba Vibration is the most international band of Saint-Petersburg.
A guitar virtuoso, composer and sound engineer Antti came to Saint-Petersburg from Finland. His hobby is to travel around the world, and favorite directions are Asia and Africa. Vasya “Libert” Zhandarov — another guitar player who has Gypsy roots and is a big fan of Latin music — has been waiting for such band to appear for a long time. A drummer player Dmitry Gainutdinov, who has ranged the whole world with group from Irkutsk. The congo player Germina Gordienko, the rising sun of local percussion, has come from Ekaterinburg and the most talented bassist of Petersburg Anton Meva, whose father is from Ethiopia. The band draws on musical influences reaching from Siberia to Lapland, mixing in sounds from the St. Petersburg’s streets and the southern tributaries of the Congo and Nile rivers. What makes it work, Makagila says, “it something found in the improvisation on Congolese rhythms and the melodies of our languages”.
The music of “Simba” is the result of a merge of cultures within this the most cosmopolitan band of Saint-Petersburg. This is an original fusion of various musical traditions: Congolese, Jamaican, Cuban, Russian, Finnish and others. Seraphim composes and sings his songs in five languages — Lingala, Swahili, French, English and Russian.
Simba Vibration has received an enthusiastic acclaim from the audience in Saint-Petersburg, Moscow, Pskov (a series of concerts in the T.I.R.), in Petrozavodsk (in various clubs and on festivals “Isthmus”, “Myllarit reloaded”, “Vozdukh”), on the “Empty Hills” festival near Moscow, in Barnaul, Samara and Vladimir. The band obtained a golden medal on the folk-blues festival “Neva Delta”.
Simba Vibration has toured in Germany, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Czech Republic and Denmark. They cooperated with musicians from such bands as “Markscheider Kunst”, “Kimbata”, “Myllarit”, “Dobranoch”, “Leningrad” and others. “Simba” is always ready to participate in various musical events aimed against racism or to help homeless people. They are happy to play on all stages and on any conditions — from the African savanna to the snows of Lapland. There home is the Earth. And their music belongs to the whole world.
В начале 90-х годов питерский студент из Конго Селенге Макангила, ставший известен у нас как Серафим, основал небольшую группу, собираясь выступать только для «своих» питерских африканцев, но вскоре выяснилось, что слухи о необычном проекте поползли по городу, а группа стала широко известна в ангеграундных музыкальных кругах. Так они попали в "TaMtAm'е" первый независимый музыкальный клуб Санкт-Петербурга, создателем и вдохновителем которого был участник АКВАРИУМА Всеволод Гаккель, там же произошла встреча с музыкантами одной из лучших питерских групп MARKSCHEIDER KUNST.
С 1996 по 2003 год Серафим - участник MARKSCHEIDER KUNST, «африканское лицо коллектива, комок энергии, танца и пения». Но уже тогда, его самобытное творчество развивалось отдельным направлением в группе и заметно выделялось, хотя и вписывалось в общий стиль веселых латиноамериканских ритмов. В рамках группы Серафиму явно было тесно. Его энергия била через край.
В 2005 году Серафим осуществляет свою мечту - создает собственный проект Simba Vibration, ориентированный на исполнение музыки именно африканской традиции. На языке суахили Simba означает Лев. Серафим пытается выразить в музыке то, что описывает как «новое звучание и философию конголезского сукусса ( от фр soukouss) – танцевальной музыки Заира и Конго, близкой по стилю Zaiko Langa Langa, Papa Wemba, Lita Bembo и Pepe Kale. Стиль Soukouss вышел из популярного в Африке в 50-ые годы CUBAN RHUMBA, который, смешавшись с танцевальными ритмами Kwassa Kwassa и Zouk, приобрел африканский колорит. Данный стиль, рожденный в Конго и Заире, сегодня охватил всю Африку и по популярности уступает только reggae.
В музыкальных композициях Серафима Makagila прослеживается и западное и восточное влияние африканской музыки, включая музыкальные традиции Бурунди, Руанды и Танзании. Истоки творчества Серафима - в его детских семейных путешествиях на африканские озера, где он впитывал мелодии различных диалектов, музыкальных культур, экзотику экстравагантных костюмов и танцев. Это влияние произвело неизгладимое впечатление на всю жизнь музыканта. Имея отца католика и мусульманку мать, Серафим с самого детства воспитывался в традициях толерантности и интереса ко всем культурам.
«Когда я начал сочинять свою собственную музыку, я не думал о религиозном начале. Вместо этого я брал больше от ритмов world music, фолка, регги, кубинской, колумбийской музыки и рока». Неслучайно Simba Vibration стала одной из самых интернациональных групп Петербурга. В ее составе - виртуозный финский гитарист, композитор и звукорежиссер Anti, гитарист с цыганскими корнями и большой знаток латиноамериканской музыки – Василий Жандаров Libert, барабанщик из Иркутска Дмитрий Гайнутдинов, объездивший с концертами пол мира, конгистка Гермина Гордиенко - звезда питерского перкуссионизма, приехавшая из Екатеринбурга и талантливый басист Антон Мева, который не афиширует, но и не скрывает свое наполовину эфиопское происхождение.
Музыка «Симбы» — соединение разных культур от Африки до Урала и Лапландии, оригинальный сплав самых разнообразных музыкальных традиций: конголезских, ямайских, кубинских, финских, русских; песни на пяти языках — лингала, суахили, французском, английском и русском.
Симбу недостаточно просто слышать в записи, их непременно надо видеть, а еще лучше «зажигать» вместе с ними. Создание позитивного настроения, солнечной музыки, объединяющей людей разных стран и континентов, энергетически заряжающей и меняющей мир к лучшему - одна из главных миссионерских задач Серафима. Сам музыкант называет свою музыку просто «афро- позитив». Неслучайно Simba Vibration – частый музыкальный гость на благотворительных и антирасистских концертах, музыкальных акциях, направленных в помощь бездомным и больным детям. Когда корреспондент St.Petersburg Times спросил музыканта об одной антивоенной песне, написанной о Конго, Серафим заметил: «Когда я писал эту песню в 1996 году, я понятия не имел, что будет война в моей родной стране, я просто волновался о том, что может случиться со всем человечеством». Музыка Симбы наполнена сопричастностью всему происходящему на нашей планете, солнечной энергией Радости и Любви. Музыканты с удовольствием играют на любых площадках и для самых разных аудиторий.
Концерты Simba Vibration триумфально прошли в гастрольных турах по Литве, Латвии, Польше, Германии, Финляндии, Чехии и России. Своими зажигательными ритмами Simba Vibration покорила Питер, Москву, Екатеринбург, Выборг, Псков (серия концертов в клубе T.I.R.), Пермь, Петрозаводск (в клубах и на фестивалях Istmus, «Мюллярит-перезагрузка», «Воздух»), Барнаул, Самару, Владимир, Краснодар, Ставрополь, Ростов и др
На фолк-блюз фестивале «Дельта Невы» Simba Vibration получила золотую медаль. В разное время с группой сотрудничали музыканты из таких групп как «Маркшейдер Кунст», «Кимбата», «Мюллярит», «Добраночь», «Ленинград» и др.
