About me: I'm a writer from country Victoria.
My first young adult book, NOTES FROM THE TEENAGE UNDERGROUND (Pan Macmillan, Bloomsbury) won the 2007 Victorian Premier's Prize and the inaugural Gold Inky from the magnifico Inside a Dog website.
My next book, EVERYTHING BEAUTIFUL will be out in November. It's about the unlikely romance between a fat girl and a wheelchair boy at a Christian holiday camp. Meanwhile I am blogging at simmone.livejournal.com
About NFTU:
Heathers meets I Shot Andy Warhol in this gritty ode to underground cool by award-winning screenwriter and debut Australian novelist Howell. The story's contagious blend of video store lingo, catty alpha girl politics and a twinge of real heart is both knowingly pretentious and fun. When 17-year-old Gem and her anti-establishment pals, Lo and Mira, form a group called Ug (short for Underground) in order to flaunt and elevate their fringe social standing, there's no doubt that each of their lives is about to change. Ug's goal? To shock their cookie-cutter classmates by making a subversive film and airing it at a "Happening," à la Warhol's Factory. When the supposedly united trio's plan backfires Gem decides to create and air a solo project about life as she sees it. With references to Valerie Solanas, Edie Sedgwick, Dostoevsky and Germaine Greer, teen misfits and film geeks will devour this renegade read with pleasure.

I am working on reading your book right now! It's very inspirational and is getting me back into art and whatnot again. I tend to be very influenced by the books I read, so from the feel of things I think I am going to have a very creative summer. [: I just got a videocamera for my birthday, and I am only on page 86 of your book right now, but an underground film sounds like a fantastic idea for a summer project! Thank you for writing that book and getting me back into art again!

i read your book last week and absolutely loved it! it seems like it actually is written by a teenager, which a lot of adult authors can't seem to manage, and it was a really interesting concept.
i signed up for your workshop at sandy library but turned up late and totally wimped out (yeah i know, i'm wedgy-ing myself for being so lame) but yeah i wish i hadn't cause it sounded like it was going to be really good.
aeee would you be able to tell me what the 17th verse of the 'San Francisco Blues' is? im writing a story on it and i forgot to write down what it was about thanks for the sessions mel
Hey! Thank you very much. That's awesome. I'm so glad to hear. If you don't mind me asking, which books were those? I hope you enjoy them regardless though!!
Thanks for your brilliant comment on my blog. So well said! It does make me so sad how desensitized we are becoming and how low of a priority education is. BTW, your book is on the top of my wish list, I absolutely can't wait to read it. I've heard so many great things!
Thanks! They had special photobooths set up where you could get your picture taken. The screentests were amazing, even though there were only 6 screens set up so we had to sit through about 5 people we didn't know before we got to someone like Edie or Nico or Lou Reed or whoever...
Just wanted to tell you how much I love 'Notes'. Made it even better after I got to see the Andy Warhol exhibition in Brisbane (and 'The Kiss')! Keep up the good work! :D
