Two heads are better then one. This classic phrase goes hand in hand with Simon & Shaker, two of the most important artists to emerge from the clubbing panorama in the last few years.
We are very proud of everything that has happened and happening to us at the moment', comments Simon Garcia, '10 years ago we would not have believed all of this'. Words that demonstrate that these artists still conserve the same illusion that started them on this journey, something very difficult to maintain in an industry that is constantly on the move. 'It is important to always look forward and sometimes having a peak into the past to learn from what has occured, but we always have our sights fixed to the future', states Karim Shaker.
Looking back for a moment this brief retrospect gives us an opportunity to outline why this duo are regarded so highly internationally: more than 50 productions that include original releases and remixes on prestigious labels such as Global Underground, Ministry Of Sound, Audio Therapy, Little Mountain, Stealth, to name a few, with an extensive list of productions that cover many genres, ranging from House to Tech-House and all including the Simon & Shaker sound. This sound has marked every track in their extensive catalogue, recognisable for fans such as Dubfire, Deep Dish, Pete Tong, Lee Burrdige, Carl Cox, John Digweed, Sander Kleinenberg, to name only a few, who have all included tracks on compilations.
When speaking about Simon & Shaker you not only think about their quality productions but also their sets around the globe: 'Our style of djing is original, both of us are in the booth continually interacting with each other' states Karim; perfect harmony and understanding between the two, which is unique to this duo who have been in each others company from a very early age: 'the crowds really appreciate what is going on during one of our sets, it has converted into one of our trademarks'. A partnership not only in the booth but also in the studio, who have been able to play around the world: Tokyo, Montreal, Paris, Miami, Moscow, Buenos Aires, Rotterdam, Sao Paulo, Los Angeles, Bali, Jakarta, Oslo, Edinburgh, Montreal, Sofia and the multitude of other cities around the globe including the most important cities in Spain, especially Madrid: 'It’s incredible when we play in Madrid' states Simon. 'We were residents for many years at some of the best clubs in the capital, but during the last three years constant touring has meant we have been unable to play regularly but we have been able to play between two to three times a year, It really is amazing every time we play because the crowd have grown up with us and really are part of the set when we play in Madrid' mention Simon & Shaker in reference to their sold out gigs at Space of Sound, one of Spain’s most influential clubs.
The studio, the gigs… all of this may seem sufficient with so little time available, but the guys want to do more. 'At the moment we are also concentrating on our label, State Recordings. We have signed a label deal with Armada Music, so the future will be very interesting for State, A deal which we have been in negotiations for a couple of months and has finally become a reality'. 'We are finishing the 10th release' continues Karim, 'our tracks have worked very well and the truth is that they – Armada- also work very well as a company. Everybody is very happy with this new deal'.
There is more:Radio is a media in which we have always had a direct relationship with, from when we were 15 years old' states Simon, 'so when we received the offer from Loca FM to produce a show, we did not have to think twice', Central Park is the radio show which is broadcast weekly on Loca FM, the leading dance music station in Spain. 'It is a good way to be in constant contact with the public, we love doing radio' adds Karim, 'we have now decided to extend this concept globally, now you can download the official Statecast from our web. The Statecast is the best way to keep fans up to date on what we are playing weekly'.
Production, remixes, sets, radio-show, Label Management…
All the elements one would every need in electronic music: 'We really feel privileged to have been able to live from music for so many years' states Simon, 'we can only offer that we work hard to offer the very best at every set, every production, every radio show… see you on the dance floor!'
