Solo, although I often play my original songs and covers with all or some of the Loons' amazing house band a.k.a. the Loonatics (Laura Fernandez - piano, Kevin Stock - guitar, Dominic von Riedemann - electric guitar, Sarah Ternoway - bass and Jeffrey Bessner - harmonica).
As drummer for the Loonatics I am often asked to play drums for our many special guests, which have included The Kindly Ones, Trevor Cape, Jory Berger, Jeff Stone, Rayburn Blake, Alastair Artingstall and Paul James, to name just a few.
Born in England, guitarist and drummer Simon Loban moved to Calgary, Canada with his family as a child. He wrote his first song on his mum's guitar at the age of 12. By the age of 14 he was composing poetry and original pop and rock inspired tunes, as well as instrumental music, and forming his first bands with best friend, guitarist Kevin Herring (Ronnie Hayward / The Lovebullies). Throughout his school years he co-formed a number of bands, including a four-piece group, which featured popular folk-rock songs and original material. Other musical collaborations included work with the now Nashville-based banjo and mandolin master Terry Kinakin.
For a time, music took a back seat when he relocated to Toronto to pursue academic studies. In November 2005, encouraged by his family, and musician friends, Laura Fernandez, Noah Zacharin and Kevin Stock, he re-launched his music performance career at a small west-end Toronto bar called Loons, playing guitar and singing original compositions. Simon currently plays lead guitar with the Loons' Friday Night Jam house band, a.k.a. the Loonatics. He has been busy playing his original material on guitar in the Toronto music scene as well as playing drums and percussion as a sideman for other local musicians. Simon is currently working on producing his first solo album.
Hey Simon, Thanx for the comment. Just having a little fun with the ukulele these days. How are you? Are you heading to Calgary for Christmas or spending a quiet one at home? We're going to be at home with a warm fire in Nashville this year. ~Terry Kinakin
hey brother,
it was great having you at the open stage the last time.
i hope that you do come back...
i am recording any one who wants it done. $2 a song. either way, i am trying to create a family with this open stage... i'm also keeping it in the front for a while. the back was just too cold and bare. come early and play 3 or 4 if you'd like. i don't have a feature this week, so there's more time to play. i want you to be a part of this.
hope to see you soon,
jory.
Hi Simon! It was great to meet you at the wedding. Really enjoyed hearing you play. Would love to hear some your songs on this site! All the best.
Peace
HiSimon Loban
It'so hard to keep on top of who and when on My Space sometimes, so if you've dropped by recently then thank you and if not then this is just to let you know that there are now four songs up on my page. (assuming that the ever unreliable 'buffering' is working properly).
Not only does he play wizz guitar, and create beautiful melodies.... we also have the same shirt! It's from Guess... and... you can't get it any more, sorry.
Miss ya pal. Can't wait to get back into the groove.
