The first practice was sometime in December of 1988 and shortly after the band played their first show on April 28th, 1989 in the basement of Washburn Hall at SJSU.
The original lineup consisted of
MIKE PARK-SAXAPHONE/VOCALS
MIKE MATTINGLY-BASS/VOCALS
LYNETTE KNACKSTEDT-GUITAR/VOCALS
CHUCK PHELPS-DRUMS
The 4 piece lasted about 5 months. Next up... LARS NYLANDER on valve trombone. The addition of Lars added a bigger sound to the horns, another vocalist, and great stage presence. 3 months as a five piece which included a show at the old FULL MOON SALOON where GERRY LUNDQUIST was in attendance. The newly relocated Cornhusker met Mike Park the next weekend at the ASHKENAZ in Berkeley(by the way it was NO DOUBT opening for the SKELETONES) and there was the final piece of the puzzle. Member 6:trombone-GERRY LUNDQUIST. Gerry was a more accomplished horn player than Lars or Mike. He added another strong voice to the multiple of vocalists and was a genius on stage.
This lineup was together and remained through 1994.
At that point, the band parted ways with Mike Mattingly and brought in IAN MILLER who lasted almost two years before calling it quits.
In came JAY VANCE(CAPTURED BY ROBOTS) for the final attempt at keeping things going, but at this point the end was drawing near. Even though the band was at the height of their popularity, tensions were mounting and things were falling apart. In May of 96, the band played its final show with all the core members. In the next few months, the band continued to tour, but things finally came to an end in 1996.
The band was laid to rest and is thankful for the memories. The hope is that this page will become a place for old fans to get in touch and for new fans to be introduced to the music of Skankin' Pickle.
