There are many different ways to pronounce "Métis." The most common pronunciation in Ontario is "MAY-tee." or "may-TEE." I've noticed people from Saskatchewan are more likely to say "mitiss", or MET-iss" or "mi-TISS. I have been warned that "mitiss," in one Northern Saskatchewan dialect, also refers to a portion of the human anatomy where the sun never shines. During the First Ministers Conferences on Aboriginal Matters some people from the Maritimes pronounced it "May-Tay," as if it were two words.

About me:

In knowing my origins, being of Mikmaq and French of the Nova Scotia Prince Edwards islands area, as told to me by my mother and grandmother. My grandmother, born in October 1892, in Canada, died here in RI during the 1960’s. My mother, now in her 8th decade often tells me of the ways of life throughout her many years, from the family living in Canada to living in Maine and new Bedford, finally settling here in RI. They would often speak of the hard times of the twenties, thirties and forties, then tell how the clans would celebrate the good times and the bad with music and dance for all, they would have special stories and games for the young ones. Often the stories and the games would be use to teach us how to prepare for life. To help others to learn of the life and ways of the Metis is what I hope to accomplish. This is dedicated to my grandmother, and my mother Raining Doe. ~ Singing Elk.
