Sounds Like
Katie Campbell = Judy Garland + Chaka Khan + Sarah Vaughn + Kim Nazarian. An eclectic blend of jazz, funk, Bossa Nova, rock, musical theater and the classic swing singers.
I am Katie Campbell. I am an LA native (truly!) who started my career singing & dancing in my parents' kitchen. I loved the camera and never turned down an opportunity to put on a show! I started singing before age 3, began studying dance at 4, and the piano at 7. I attended Hamilton High School Academy of Music where I majored in "Musical Theater" and fell in love with vocal jazz ensemble. I completed my Bachelor of Music in "Jazz Studes" at Western Michigan University in 2004. While at WMU, I toured throughout Eastern & Western Europe and South Africa with the award-winning ensembles, "GOLD COMPANY", the "GOLD COMPANY SEXTET" and the "WMU CHORALE". I have also performed in various jazz venues from New York to Los Angeles including Alice Tully Hall at LINCOLN CENTER, BIRDLAND, TOWN HALL, THE JAZZ BAKERY & CATALINA BAR & GRILL. I've performed with BOBBY MCFERRIN, JANIS SIEGEL of the "Manhattan Transfer," and DARMON MEADER of the "New York Voices." In 2004, I earned the "Best Collegiate Jazz Vocalist" award from DOWNBEAT Magazine.
After college, I moved to New York City to be the stand-by for both female roles in the A Cappella ensemble "TOXIC AUDIO" (www.toxicaudio.com) in their off-Broadway show "LOUDMOUTH" at the John Houseman Theater. I continued working with "TOXIC AUDIO" in Mexico and the Caribbean. Since returning to Los Angeles, I've performed as the lead vocalist in the "MATT ROBERTS GROUP" (www.mattrobertsgroup.com), and been a guest artist with the "NEW WEST GUITAR QUARTET" (www.newwestguitar.com) and New York's "THE WEE TRIO" (www.theweetrio.com).
Other work includes multiple non-union and *now* union studio sessions, singing on the upcoming BOBBY MCFERRIN Choral Album (not yet released), singing backgrounds for GNARLS BARKLEY on the "49th GRAMMY AWARDS" telecast (2007) & for SHERYL CROW on "THE TONIGHT SHOW with Conan O'Brien" (2009).
I'm currently the vocalist in a 7-piece jazz/funk/latin ensemble called "SAN GABRIEL 7" (www.sgsjazz.com)!! Check us out sometime!! I'm also recording MY OWN SOLO CD'S -- 2 of them! -- which will be available by the end of 2009!!
I'm a full-time teacher in the Bachelor and Vocal programs at MUSICIANS INSTITUTE in Hollywood, CA. I teach music theory, ear training, voice lessons, keyboard classes, sight-singing, teaching philosophy and a class I created to help singers prepare for performances called "The Art of Preparation" (based on Darryl Hickman's book "The Unconscious Actor: Out of Control, In Full Commany"). See videos by Mr. Hickman below!
