What’s more sinful than sin? Sin+. But it’s not so much lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride that this fiery alternative-rock band is pissed off about; it’s the sins of disinformation, intimidation, fear-mongering and mental slavery.
“In a f***ed-up world, everyone is a sinner,” says Sin+ frontman Gabriel Broggini. “Most people don’t admit it, though, certainly not politicians or the Church.” Fortunately for fans in their hometown of Losone, Switzerland, and beyond, Gabriel, guitarist Ivan Broggini, bassist Gianlu Monforte and drummer Remo Monforte speak their minds in monster hooks.
Which isn’t to say they don’t play in the more intimate arena of interpersonal politics. Their song “Shoot,” for instance, is about someone with something to say who just can’t spit it out. “Shoot” shot Sin+ into the spotlight when it was picked to promote the 2009 International Ice Hockey World Championships in Berne and Zürich (April 24 to May 10). The band played at several of those games.
Sin+ was started in 2007 by brothers Gabriel and Ivan. Drummer Remo joined in short order, but finding a bassist took longer. Finally, Remo’s brother Gianlu, a guitarist, decided to take up the bass.
Among the band’s first recordings was the song “Get Control,” produced by DJ/No Religion founder Paolo Fedrigoli. Another milestone came in late 2008, when the track “1984” was heard on Vol. 14 of the acclaimed 272 Records series Riot on Sunset. By then Sin+’s point of view was clear, with Gabriel singing: “Get back the freedom you lost when your brain got washed.”
In December 2008 Sin+ hit L.A. to work with producer Fabrizio Grossi (Slash, Dave Navarro, Chad Smith and John Frusciante). The result was four new recordings – “Happy and Free,” “On a Wing and a Prayer,” “Mrs. Freak” and “Foremost Illegally Bad,” which the band cut both in English and their first language, Italian.
Those tracks will appear on a forthcoming Sin+ EP (fans have gotten a preview on MySpace), but the band is already recording demos of new material, including the song “All a Matter of Image.” On it Gabriel confesses, “When I’m on the stage/ I scream all my rage.” But he also considers the possibility that humanity can ultimately triumph over the suffering caused by society’s sins: “Try your best/ This is not a test/ Also care about the rest/ Everything can happen/ Nothing has been written.”
The band’s intensity has been undeniable since their earliest shows. But songs like “All a Matter of Image” demonstrate an expanded emotional range that suggests Sin+ is just beginning to write their own story.
