So where are you from?	Originally from Brooklyn, NY but exiled to Maryland (laughs)
What's your background?	I'm of Haitian, Dominican, and Puerto Rican descent.
When did you start rapping?	I started rapping when I was like 12 but I've been a fan for way longer than that.
How would you describe your style?	I think my style is just a mix of however I happen to be feeling at the time. I feel I have a broad range as far as the music I can put out based on the experiences I've had in my life. On one side you got the wild teen who was running the streets doing all sorts of crazy shit and on another you have the more mellowed out, mature, socially and politically aware person that I've grown up to be. So you mix those two together and you come out with Kalico. If I had to describe my style in one word I would say storytelling. I like telling stories whether it be something that I myself personally went through or things that I have seen or that people I know have went through.
Who do you think is hot in the rap game right now? Who are your influences?	Right now I have crazy respect for Jay-Z. I respect his hustle tremendously. He has the rap game and the business side of the rap game on lock right now. He is where I would like to be in the next let's say 5-10 years. I think the south is hot right now too. I listen to Paul Wall, T.I, Lil Wayne...just to name a few. I listen to Game, Nas, Jadakiss, Styles P, Talib Kweli, Mos Def...a lot of artists. It's not about favorites. It's just about good music.
I heard a couple of tracks off the album and it seems like you use a lot of sampling. Any reason for that?	Other than the tracks being hot, that was just my way of saying how music recycles itself. It's not about not being creative enough to make your own stuff. It's just paying homage to what's already been accomplished in music. I think the 60s-80s period produced some of the greatest music I've ever heard in my life. I'm just trying to bring that back in my genre of music which is rap/hip-hop.
That sparked my next question. What kind of music do you listen to?	EVERYTHING! (laughs) It could be polka for all I care. As long as it has a good rhythm behind it then I'll bump it like nobody's business. I'm influenced by all music which is the answer to your earlier question which I neglected to answer.
I know you probably get this all the time but where did the name Kalico come from?	You're right I do get that all the time. When I first started rapping that's when I was just becoming that wild teen running the street so I rapped about what I knew. My mother's side of the family were all drug dealers and felons so I guess it just rubbed off. I was rapping about drugs, money and violence because that's what was around me. Calico is the name of a gun manufacturer and all I did was switch the C with K and out came Kalico. But then it got to a point as I got older that I didn't want to rap about just that kind of stuff anymore. I felt like it limited me creatively and I don't think anybody wants to hear an album with just drugs and shoot-em-up bang bang stuff on it. I wanted to keep the name though and it seemed like I had to keep the image that came along with it. Calico is also the name of a pattern that's made up of different patches. So since I consider myself the product of many different music influences, I figured these different music influences could be the "patches" that make up my rap pattern.
The name of the album is "Three Sides To Every Coin". Explain that.	I'm a big Twilight Zone fan and there's an episode where a guy flips a coin to get like a free newspaper and the coin lands vertically standing up. He finds out that he's been blessed with the ability to read people's minds and tell what they're thinking. You know how when we flip a coin it's always either heads or tails? Nobody ever thinks of if it landed vertically standing up. Just like how we say theres two sides to every story. I think there's actually three sides. There's my side, there's your side and then there's the truth. We manipulate our sides of the story to make it convenient for us so the third side represents the truth and that's what I'm trying to convey. When the coin lands vertically there is no right or wrong...just truth.
