"Take two beautiful, charismatic and musically masterful girls, throw in a piano and a guitar…stir in their own sweeet lyrics and SISKIN are born to delight." (Esther Trendall - Chicks Rock)
SISKIN are Galen Ayers and Kirsty Newton; two very different girls from very different backgrounds who were lucky to discover that they could make beautiful music together.
Galen is the daughter of maverick cult legend Kevin Ayers, and so was born into a creative and unconventional world. Her poetry, voice and songwriting are infused with the sea breeze from the shores of her Spanish hometown, the famously eclectic Deia.
Kirsty grew up in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire and has been singing and playing all her life. Blessed with a gifted musical ear, she began banging out tunes on the glockenspiel at two years old and is classically trained on the piano and oboe, but taught herself bass guitar once she moved to London.
"If you revel in the elegant complexity of the music, the lyrics are something else again. In the grand tradition of meaningful female music, numbers like Sitting In A Bar and Oblivion will make you achingly aware that what you think you know about any human being is probably only their surface layer. The lyrics take you deeper and let you swim in emotional honesty for as long as the music lasts..." (excerpt from mdfalco's live review from The Evening Standard online)
SISKIN released their first single, a cover version of Joe Jackson's 'It's Different For Girls', in December 2008 to critical acclaim and received a thumbs up from Joe Jackson himself. It was also playlisted on BBC London. It is the only cover on their soon-to-be-released debut album.
The girls have already had the good fortune of performing to an incredibly wide variety of audiences, both in the UK and across Europe, and have given their talents to help raise awareness of causes near to their hearts. Some of the highlights of the past twelve months include:
* playing in Meribel in the French Alps as part of the ALTITUDE Festival, supporting Grand National;
* being the opening act in the famous French alternative female music festival "Les femmes s'en melent", supporting Phoebe Killdeer and the Short Straws;
* an interview and a live set for TV Grenoble, France;
* performing live and being interviewed on The Robert Elms Show, BBC London and subsequently being given the number one spot in his online list of 'Finest Music of 2008';
* playing at London's City Hall for International Woman's Day to support the charity Everything is a Benefit (www.everythingisabenefit.org) to raise awareness of women's suffering in Eastern Congo;
* playing a live 'Silent Gig' for Silent Disco at the Wychwood Festival, Cheltenham;
* supporting Ben Taylor across the UK.
"I felt that this band oozed friendship, unity, enthusiasm, great skill and something so vital in live concert, the ability to connect with an audience... Hopefully the girls will tour extensively over the next year and if they do I can strongly recommend that you go see this attractive, distinctive and highly entertaining trio..." Spring 2009 has seen Galen and Kirsty welcome top session percussionist Genevieve Wilkins into the fold as an occasional guest member of SISKIN, adding an extra rhythmic dimension. This summer promises to be an exciting chapter in the life of SISKIN as they release their second single "Find A Better Life" in early July, followed by their eagerly anticipated eponymous debut album later on in the month.
