Sister Carol, otherwise unknown as Carol East, is at it again with more conscious songs. This time, she is a featured artist on the Orthodox Muzik label. The Shine Your Light CD is a compilation of songs made by members from The Twelve Tribes of Israel music body. Greeting you from the tribe of Naphtali, her tunes entitled Raspel, and Garden of Eden, are expressions of her conviction to her roots.
Born and raised in the ghettos of Kingston, Sister Carol had an early influence by the music scene from being close to her father who worked as a engineer at Jamaicas radio station, RJR. There she met many prominent reggae contributors including Studio Ones legendary Clement Coxsone Dodd. Her family migrated to America where she continued her education, and maintained a strong connection to her culture.
Sister Carol began her musical career, following in the footsteps of one of her mentors and friend, DJ Brigadier Jerry. The thriving dancehall scene of the 70s welcomed her rich blend of style and culture. Her influence was so positive, it placed her in the spotlight and she was offered an opening slot for one of Jamaica's finest vocal trios, The Meditations.
Not long after, she recorded her first two records, Liberation for Africa and Black Cinderella, then Tuff Gong label released Isis-the Original Womb-Man. Since then, she has made over 8 CDs, including her 1996 release, Lyrically Potent, for which she received a highly regarded Grammy nomination.
The industry calls for Sister Carol in more ways than one, for instance, she appeared in two Jonathan Demme movies, Something Wild and Married to the Mob, made several television appearances including, NBC's David Lettermen and Late Night With Conan O'Brien, and then there are the countless articles written about her work in publications such as Billboard, and the Village Voice. To add to her versatile style, she was the familiar voice, as MC, behind Night Music with David Sanborn.
With years of experience, a humble upbringing, and Jah Rastafari guiding the way, Sister Carol is an inspiration for this, and future generation. The mind is open to light through prayer and spiritual meditation.
