Our first review, from the excellent Leonard's Lair

Review: Penguin Party - See Thru Songs
Published April 13. 2008
http://leonardslair.wordpress.com/

About a month ago I got an E-mail from Essex-based musician Dave Milligan, who happens to be one-third of Arco; a fine band whose brand of quiet, melancholic rock has thus far produced two albums' worth of new material.
Sadly, there's no news of Arco's third long player yet but thankfully Mr. Milligan's own solo project. Penguin Party, has produced an equally fine record, albeit one which distances itself away from the artist's usual band.

Although 'See Thru Songs' certainly doesn't stick to a tried and trusted formula, it certainly echoes the British new wave scene. 'Elephant's Graveyard' and I'm Ready For My Closeup, Mr Demille' are the songs which most recall the intelligent left-field pop of Squeeze but 'Goin' Back To Grandma's' reminds me, rather disturbingly, of The Wurzels. Of the other noteworthy moments, there's an uptempo, punkier version of the Arco original 'Lullaby', 'United State Of Grace' is a lovely, hopeful finale whilst 'Someone Else's Turn' toys with funk. His best moment, though, occurs two tracks in. With its old-fashioned instrumentation and Milligan's impressive aching vocal, 'Before I Go Away' compares very favourably to the work of The Montgolfier Brothers. Admittedly, 'See Thru Songs' doesn't fit easily into the modem agenda but it's highly tuneful and charming, with just the right air of quirkiness to rank it as one of the better nostalgically-flavoured records of recent times.

From Notlame.com:

Penguin Party "See Thru Songs"

What cool, engaging release – but for the reasons most albums hit me well ‘n good! This one is not a rocker, not particularly sprightly and light-in-the-toes, but it has a hypnotic quality that pulls you in. Dave Milligan is not playing it safe with his pop inspirations with his healthy love of early Squeeze, Nick Lowe and Martin Newell, it’s a distinctively British take on pop craftmenship but it works extremely well on “See Thru Songs”.

From Koolkatmusik.com:

Penguin Party "See Thru Songs"

Very catchy, very charming, and very extremely British effort from Dave Milligan who is also a member of Arco, a band whose brand of quiet, melancholic rock has thus far produced two albums' worth of new material. Penguin Party is the guise under which Dave has produced a "solo" effort of sorts. The rootsy "Goin' Back To Grandma's" is a Kinks (circa "Muswell Hill") and more recent Nick Lowe-inspired sing-along! The chirpy and jangly "She Smells" is another "Argybargy"-influenced song! The vocal interplay throughout recalls the Difford/Tillbrook dynamic of Squeeze. EXCELLENT!!!

From http://www.powerpopaholic.com/

Penguin Party "See Thru Songs"

Dave Milligan's solo project Penguin Party is sure to appeal to fans of Martin Newell, with it's very English nostalgic music hall pop. It opens with the quirky "Someone Else's Turn To Be Me" a swirling mass of organ and cymbals with a smooth bassline driving the song along. The follow up is a reverb heavy ballad "Beaten, Black and Blue" with a bit of "Fool on The Hill" flute it makes a compelling listen. "Just Like A Chorus" is most definitely like a lost Cleaners From Venus track and this is followed by another low key tune "Mirrorball" which reminds me of an Andy Partridge pop ballad. By mid album, some 80's synth influences creep back in on songs like "Lullaby" and "She Smells" - and it's a flashback to Modern English! The best fun here is the pub anthem "Goin' Back To Grandma's" with the hummable chorus and foot stompin' beat. There are a lot of subtle shifts in mood and genre on the album up to this point. The remaining tracks have a hard time measuring up, but this album has a charming set of pop that will sit well with ye merry anglophile power pop fans.

Penguin Party - See Thru Songs (Sitting Target)

With an unmistakable ‘out-of-its-time’ production and songs which bring to mind classic Nick Lowe and Squeeze, See Thru Songs is a diverting flashback to early ‘80s Britpop. Songwriter Dave Milligan (of Arco fame) leads us through a collection of sticky hooks, quirky arrangements and choruses that insist on taking up residence, and repeated whenever one is in the proximity of running water (you’ll be singing these songs in the shower). Old synths and treated guitars fill up the gaps, and like the best pop, you’re life will mostly remain unaltered and governments definitely won’t fall, but sun-drenched drives in the country, with the windows down, will be enhanced. www.sittingtarget.net Rob F.

From Delusions Of Adequacy:
http://www.adequacy.net/review.php?reviewID=8930

Dave Milligan, one-half of the UK indie band arco, has embarked on a side project he's dubbed Penguin Party. Mainly a solo project, written and produced by Milligan, he steps away from arco's slow-core rock and into more upbeat and quirky pop-rock territory with the help of a few guest musicians, including the other half of arco, Chris Healey.
With a decidedly British flair, Penguin Party prove they can play stylistic pop-rock tunes using numerous instruments, varied influences and genre-hopping arrangements, along with their own musical talents, similar to the likes of Squeeze, Of Montreal and The Santiago Steps. Milligan and Co. adorn their naive melodies with blotches of beats and snappy electric guitar bursts, some with angular tempos and brisk beats, occasionally building textural tapestries with soft touches of percussion and keyboard washes accented with various electronic drones. Waves of swirling synths flutter over light guitar strumming, creating sweet sounding, semi-psychedelic melodies -----------------------------------------------------------------

Review: Various Artists - The Germinal Disc (An Introduction To Sitting Target Music)
Published December 27, 2008

Of all the records I’ve reviewed this year, one of the most endearing of releases was by Dave Milligan AKA Penguin Party. On his debut album, Milligan recalled a classic style of songwriting from the era of Squeeze and Elvis Costello. Until now, that record has been the sole offering from Sitting Target Music but now comes the introduction to the rest of the roster courtesy of ‘The Germinal Disc’. With each of the five artists (including Penguin Party) providing a couple of new songs each, it’s an excellent way of finding out about the other talents on the Sitting Target imprint.

If it’s one thing these artists have in common it’s that they each aim their targets for the heart. Whilst John Aldington and Nicola Harrison opt for acoustic laments and dreamy folk respectively, Penguin Party’s Dave Milligan creates a very British style of power pop nostalgia as the titles ‘Song For My Old Lady’ and ‘Whatever Happened To Tomorrow’s World?’ suggest. There is a marked contrast between the two contributions from Urko Daniels though. Whilst ‘Sarah/34′ is a real weepie of a ballad, the guttural ‘F**k Off And Leave Me Alone’ (complete with barber shop vocals) recalls none other than Shaun Ryder. That just leaves Superchap’s articulate take on lo-fi indie.

In its compact thirty-five minutes, ‘The Germinal Disc’ provides a great showcase for some otherwise unknown talents. Daniels and Harrison, in particular, stand out from the pack with their more adventurous approach but overall it’s a victory for high quality songwriting over low budgets.

Various Artists
The Germinal Disc
Sitting Target Records
2008

Compilation time again, this time from London based label Sitting Target who aim to bring you "quality alternative pop / rock / folk by wilfully obscure acts". Not lacking in courage, then.

Actually, there is nothing obscure here. Nothing even vaguely art house either. Nothing particularly quirky or oddball either. Time for a quick sprint through the tracks now. John Aldington can hold his head high with two classy songs that echo Michael Legrand and John Martyn - a good trick if you can do it (and he can!). Nicola Harrison's songs have a vaguely psychedelic/folk feel to them but manage not to sound dated. Superchap turn out to be purveyors of classy and catchy indie pop songs that hark back to the days when Britpop wasn't a dirty word. Penguin Party likewise do a nice line in a similar vein but Urko Daniels seems a little outclassed in this company as he doesn't really stray far from bedsit land.

Definetly a cut above the average, there is much to enjoy here. Like all compilations, you won't like everything but you will like something. The best track, in our humble opinion, was John Aldington's elegant "Tomorrow's Saturday".

John Aldington - CD - Songs From The Garden
Review from the superb toxicpete.co.uk

Acoustic folkster John Aldington's new album 'Songs From The Garden' is an airy but vibrant offering in that quite typical, eloquent and graceful British style.

Aldington's music is all clean-lined, unplugged and refreshingly optimistic sounding. Aldington's guitar style is one of relentless, crisp, clean picking and punctuative strumming whilst his vocals are lightly weighted but cleverly assertive - Aldington's voice cuts through and across his busy but descriptive guitar work resulting in a joyfully vibrant but workmanlike and mood-enhancing vibe. Aldington certainly knows how to deliver his poetic ramblings; his style can be boldly rhythmic and wordy or sparsely augmented and concise - whatever, whichever, Aldington definitely gets his music across and certainly begs to be heard.

'Songs From The Garden' is almost a step back in time; it's open but expressive simplicity reminiscent of Sarstedt, Donovan, McLean and Rose. But, Aldington's very much on-the-money here with his wonderfully honest acoustic wares that also blend in the nuances of Fretwell, Rice and Young to result in a warmly enticing sound that's musically rich in emotion and loaded with meaningful lyrics - pretty cool stuff all-in-all!

John Aldington's 'Songs From The Garden' pretty much takes acoustic music back to basics; just voice and wonderfully executed but restrained guitar delivering Aldington's open but enticing musical poems. It's simple but it's pretty compelling. Maybe not quite having the commercial appeal of albums such as 'O' or 'Magpie' by the aforementioned but possibly just as worthy and equally 'timeless'. 'Songs From The Garden' by John Aldington is a pretty cool and sophisticated album of ezy 'folk' songs that offers a bit of respite from some of the more overly-produced works of late - 'Songs From The Garden' benefits from its inherent accessibility brought about through its totally stripped-down approach and equally simplistic but deferential production.

Germinal Disc review from the wonderful www.toxicpete.co.uk

The Germinal Disc' is a sampler from Sitting Target Music; featuring Urko Daniels, Penguin Party, Superchap, Nicola Harrison and John Aldington - two tracks from each, ten tracks of musical excellence! And, Sitting Target have made it easy for me with their succinct intro's to the artists so I'm just gonna plagiarise from the press pack as follows; Urko Daniels - 'Tense, sometimes shocking songs with uncompromising character', Penguin Party - 'Spangly powerpop song-stories for grown-ups', Superchap - 'Quirky indiepop gems obsessed with junk culture, film and sci-fi', Nicola Harrison - 'An extraordinary English Rose: A voice like red petals, lyrics full of thorns', John Aldington - 'A breathtaking voice, and emotive flat-picking acoustic guitar style'.

Like any compilation, 'The Germinal Disc' is a double edged sword initially showcasing the individual acts therein but also, of course, bringing the label to the public's attention. 'The Germinal Disc' does both very well but bonus points must go to the five artists cuz the tracks here are wonderful in their own individual rights but they're also great choices in the way they tease, tantalise and whet the appetite leaving you wanting more of the same. I don't know whether its the artists or the label that selects the songs for inclusion - whichever, the choice was inspired!! The sleeve notes give loads of information about all the artists included here so there's no excuses for not looking further!!

Although the music included here is pretty varied, there is a generalised theme running through the album and that's one of loosely acoustic music with a cutting-edge, nu-wave bent. But, more than that, Sitting Target are making a very hard-hitting statement here; they're showing off a bit, really telling the public and potential new clients where they stand on the scene, what they're aiming for and what they're trying to do. So, from Sitting Target's point of view it's definitely thumbs-up and 'well done guys'. As far as the artists are concerned, Sitting Target are obviously doing everything they can to get names and music out there and established - and you can't ask for too much more from a relatively small label can you?

So, 'The Germinal Disc' is a real worker - the artists are represented wonderfully with each song completely on-the-money as far promotion is concerned; it must work cuz I'd not heard anything from Urko, Superchap or Harrison before but now I've been given the opportunity to 'taste the pudding' and I like it!! Ok, let's be realistic, 'The Germinal Disc' aint gonna be a best seller and Sitting Target obviously know that as well as we do. But, Sitting Target show that they are willing to go to some lengths to get introductions made and get their artist's names and music out there. So, top marks for the crew at Sitting Target but, massive credit to Urko Daniels, Penguin Party, Superchap, Nicola Harrison and John Aldington.

Toxic Pete reviews Penguin Party's "See Thru Songs"

Penguin Party is the new project from musical all-rounder Dave Milligan (Arco), with a little help from a few friends; 'See Thru Songs' is an album packed full of typically British pop charm, a quirky but stylish, funtime work that's like a cross-over between Difford/Tillbrook, Kevin Ayers and Robert Wyatt - the classic observational pop writing of the former pairing, the sparkling light-rock individuality of the inbetweeny and the uniqueness and vocal acrobatics of the latter. Quite a combination, quite a blend, quite a strangely-strange but oddly-normal coming together! Hey, it works though!

Milligan aka Penguin Party makes smart pop music; his writing is naively intelligent (if that makes sense) and his scores are beautifully and sensitively crafted to colour the poetic lyrics, to emphasise, to adorn and enhance rather than clutter or choke down on the refreshingly individualistic but mature words. Milligan tends to keep it all quite low-key preferring light jangly guitars, expressive keys and militaristic percussive beats to add just the right amount of clever playfulness and hookiness to the mix. Left-field pop maybe but certainly on the brighter side of the odd-ball fence; that's 'brighter' as in somewhat more joyous rather than totally uplifting cuz Penguin Party's music aint actually cheery and all bright whistles and bells, oh no, it can be thought provoking and evocative as much as it can be childlike and coy.

'See Thru Songs' by Penguin Party is a strange but nicely rewarding album; it's well conceived, superbly written and beautifully performed and Milligan certainly puts a bit of fun back into the pop world - well, at least this album puts a smile on yer face purely for its quirkiness if nothing else!! Quite whether 'See Thru Songs' has the ability to be a true hit I'm not at all sure - perhaps Penguin Party will prove to be just too clever for the fickle record buying public, perhaps 'See Thru Songs' will be just too individualistic and too 'grown up' to be a hit - perhaps Penguin Party is destined to remain a cult act and 'See Thru Songs' an 'underground' album. Who knows, Penguin Party sure is an interesting concept/project and 'See Thru Songs' is an enjoyable and fascinating work; pop for pop's sake, good, old fashioned, honest-to-goodness, simplistic pop music, no frills, no big statements, no excuses, and really no surprises - just beautifully crafted, melodic songs that err on the gentler and cosseting side of the pop spectrum. Review of John Aldington's "Songs From The Garden" from Leonard's Lair

Never having been a follower of singer-songwriters such as James Taylor and Cat Stevens, there was a danger I could have overlooked the first album from John Aldington, a modern day solo artist who is compared to those early-70’s stalwarts. However, having been enchanted by his contributions on Sitting Target label’s ‘The Germinal Disc’ compilation, I have been looking forward to listening to his works again. Like a cross between the starry-eyed romance of Gilbert O’Sullivan and the gritty intimacy of The Montgolfier Brothers’ Roger Quigley, there is something magical about the songs of Aldington which transcend nostalgia and sound fresh and alive.

Aldington is a narrator of romantic tales; one such story is ‘It’s Too Late’ where “hearts get broken” and the gentleman at the centre of a love triangle has “got a woman at home”. It’s a simple subject but one where Aldington’s old-fashioned style of songwriting works extremely well. Indeed, by voicing third-person disapproval in his lovely, haunting tones and employing addictive key changes, this song and most of the album are elevated to something special.

Not many artists could get away with “Looking back through the years of that endless summer” and “some dreams get lost along the way” (as on ‘Looking Back’) but Aldington’s performance in front of the mic seems so pure and unsullied that the innocence is captured perfectly; the fact that he accompanies it with a fine piece of jangly guitar certainly helps too. Similarly, the beautiful ‘Growing Pains’ aches with melancholy and is another stunning track.

Whilst listening to his songs, I can almost visualise Aldington sitting on a sturdy tree branch and observing another failed love affair from afar. He shakes his head sadly and then is inspired to write a new tune about what he has just witnessed. My overactive imagination aside though, ‘Songs From The Garden’ proves that Aldington is not only a fine vocalist and tunesmith but he has also captured that lost art of storytelling. More of the same next time please.

Songs From The Garden review in Rootstime, Belgium

The wonderful John Aldington album Songs From The Garden has been reviewed in Rootstime:

Vandaar onze voorkeur voor songs als “It’s Too Late”, “Looking Back”, “Get Back Home”, “Who Am I?”, “Had Enough” en het heel mooi afsluitende nummer “Closing Time”.

   About Sitting Target Music
SITTING TARGET MUSIC is a fanatically independant record label based in the south east of England

The NEW SITTING TARGET ALBUM
is "Songs From The Garden" by John Aldington
With an unabashed nod to the past, John’s songs join hands with some of the classic Transatlantic singer-songwriters from the late-60s and early-70s like James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Graham Nash and Paul Simon. There’s even a touch of Peter Sarstedt’s continental chic in the opener, Tomorrow’s Saturday! When was the last time you saw his name in a press release, eh?
At first glance, there’s an almost pastoral beauty to his music – incredible, flat-picked acoustic guitar dancing effortlessly across heartfelt vocals – but it’s not too long before you start to notice the scratches, scabs and scars that tell the real story. Not that Songs From The Garden ever wallows in its sadness. The dogged determination of John’s lyrics – just listen to ‘Get Back Home’ – and the prickling energy of that gorgeous guitar never stop pushing the songs forward.
You’ve probably heard lots of debut albums from guitar-playing singer-songwriters… but we think it’s a long time since you’ll have heard anything like John Aldington.
Songs From The Garden by John Aldington – another proud moment for Sitting Target!

Hi, many thanks for adding me. I'm listening to Nicola Harrison as you suggested - her songs are beautiful, thank you for the recommendation. Will have a listen to some of your other artists as well! I really love the cover art for the cd as well by the way.

I must say that I'm honoured that you brought this wonderful music to my attention. I will certainly be buying "The Germinal Disc" once I've posted this comment...

Hope everyone in the Sitting Targets camp has a good Christmas & New Year...
