Today, 1 in 3 marriages end in divorce. However, it isn’t likely that a woman will lose her head over the matter…at least not physically anyway! But that was just an everyday fear held by many women pursued by King Henry the VIII of England between 1509 and 1547. The man called the most goodly and handsome prince in Christendom by many was a King women mooned over and would give their lives to please, literally! This is the story of the six who, for their brief shining moments, held the attention of the Henry…and the world.
Created by The Foursight Theatre Company in Wolverhampton, England in 1999, Six Dead Queens…and an Inflatable Henry! is an experimental musical packed with intrigue, rowdy good humor and duels of words (and knitting needles). The action takes place in eternity where Henry’s consorts are forced to spend their days and nights vaulting over each other for the top spot and the answer to the question: Who was the true Queen? Three Catherines, two Annes and one Jane prowl around the centric “Bed of State” where their destinies were both made and unmade in this interesting and unusual take on one of the most dramatic periods of English history. Whether Henry Tudor, who is obviously full of “hot-air”, survives the love and wrath of his wives… well, you’ll have to see the play.
Never before performed in the United States, The Mobtown Players will be producing a brand new take on this age-old tale of usurpation, sex, love, child-bearing and sisterhood from February 15th – March 8th, 2008.
