Interests

  • General

I'm interested in things that might become useful in my writing. For my current play I've researched Victorian achitecture, eboga, witchcraft, the most popular ice cream in Cincinnati, baseball, ecological issues in Kentucky, alternative healing, and nineteenth century diseases. For another project I studied the Battle of Agincourt and books, lifestyles and fashions of the period. I also learned about religious pilgrimmages, where some of the destination churches were located and what were the most popular relics. I was so fascinated by the Northern California Shriners Hospital for Children which I toured in 1997 that it showed up in the movie I wrote for A Place Called Sacramento.
  • Music

Back in the '60s Tiny Tim reorded a song with the words "The ice caps are melting, The tide is rushing in, All the world is drowning, To wash away our sin. I don't know the name of the song. Maybe it was just a fragment stuck in among the songs that had names. It might have been old. Most of his songs were from earlier eras, Vaudeville, music halls etc. One of his other memorable songs was from World War I. I think it was called "Stay down Here Where You Belong." The devil was advising his son "who wanted to go up above" to stay "down below" because even though it was hot "down here" it was war "up there." At the time I just thought Tiny Tim was kind of a freaky guy. Now I wonder if he wasn't something of a prophet.
  • Movies

My all time favorite movie is The African Queen. (Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart) Right now I have a special interest in movies about religious and patriotic hypocrisy, such as Keeper of the Flame (Hepburn and Tracy), Meet John Doe (Barbara Stanwyck and Gary Cooper) and The Night of the Hunter (Robert Mitchum and Lillian Gish). You can see my latest movie, Hitchhiker, here: http://southwestonline.sitestream.com/APlaceCalledSacramento2005.vsml? package=1844634&vsus=&vsps=&media=1945636

You do things your own way - and it's made for colorful times.
Your life hasn't turned out how anyone expected, thank goodness!

    Your best movie matches: Clerks
    , Garden State, Napoleon Dynamite
  • Television

I don't have a tv anymore. Life is too short to wade through so much garbage. But I like to watch Turner Classic movies with my sister sometimes.
  • Books

One of the most important books I have ever read is Systems of Survival by Jane Jacobs.
  • Heroes

Smedley Darlington Butler The US Marine Corps Major General, winner of TWO Congressional Medals of Honor, who had the courage in 1933 to write the book, War is a Racket. Stephen Colbert, who explained the difference between the Titanic and the Hindenberg. Cindy Sheehan

About me:

I recently discovered actors and now everything I write is for actors. My short movie Hitchhiker won the award for Audience Favorite at the A Place Called Saramento festival in October. Preproduction has begun on my next movie, which will feature two old men and a boy. I just finished what I hope will be the last major revision of my first 2 act stage play. Besides writing and working with actors, I love animals, especially my dog Meggie.
You Were a Porcupine
You have created your own path in life, and you encourage others to do the same.
Even as life progresses, you always maintain a sense of wonder and innocence.
The Hierophant Card
You are the the Hierophant card. The Hierophant,
called The Pope in some decks, is the
preserver of cultural traditions. After
entering The Emperor's society, The
Hierophant teaches us its wisdom. The
Hierophant learns and teaches our cultural
traditions. The discoveries our ancestors
have made influence the present. Without
forces such as The Hierophant who are able to
interpret and communicate traditional lore,
each generation would have to begin to learn
anew. As a force that is concentrated on our
past and our culture, The Hierophant can
sometimes be stubborn and set in his ways.
This is a negative trait he shares with his
zodiac sign, Taurus. But like Taurus he is
productive. His traditional lore can provide
a source of inspiration for the creatively
inclined, and his knowledge provides an
excellent foundation for those who come into
their own in the business world. Image from:

Who I'd like to meet:

People who are interesting, energetic, stimulating, provocative, upbeat, fun, and/or creative in spite of being appalled by the political scene. Elephants, or someone who can introduce me to an elephant. I love elephants in spite of their unfortunate association with the wrong party.
