“Sixteen Layers are like a juggernaut……..their debut is a sonic tour de force………File under ‘I’ for impressive……..” (Hot Press)
Sixteen Layers represent a breed of rocker that draws from Buckley as much as Metallica - Lennon as much as Faith No More, but most of all they are Sixteen Layers. They make the music they want, a powerful live force with a growing army of fans.
Sixteen Layers are:
Niall Donnelly – Vocals/Rhythm Guitar
Dom Muldoon – Lead Guitarist
John Colbart – Bass/Backing vocals
Tim McGrath – Drums/Percussion
Individually accomplished and respected full time musicians, all four have worked as session musicians (recording and live) on the Irish and international stage with artists including Paddy Casey, Damien Dempsey, Laura Izibor and international producers such as George Drakoulis, Mike Hedges, John Cornfield, John Fryer, Michael Beinhorn and Jim Lowe. They have also been involved in various film and TV projects as composers, players and performers.
They came together as Alligator in 2006, changing their name to Sixteen Layers in 2008. Their stunning debut album “I AM NO ONE”, released independently on their own label has been a labour of love, self-penned, and with their wealth of studio experience, largely self produced. The album was recorded in various locations starting off at Grouse Lodge, they then moved to Windmill Lane, then Jam Studios in Kerry, then over to Sawmills Studio in Cornwall where they worked with Jim Lowe (Foo Fighters, Charlatans, Stereophonics) before returning to Dublin to finish off in James’ Street, Dublin.
“……….a beautifully produced eleven-track stomp along the line between straight up old-school rock and modern-day anthemic indie……….it’s easy to forget that Sixteen Layers is even better live” (State.ie)
The last year has seen the band wowing audiences with their incendiary live performances leading one German rock critic to describe them as “……. the bastard son of Lizzy and U2”. In January 09 Sixteen Layers were approached by production company – Ten Ways Media – to document the process of an independent band releasing and promoting an album. Having stuck to the band for three months, Sixteen Layers fan and filmmaker Tom O’Neill and his guys filmed, interviewed and recorded everything from in-stores and rehearsals to the Crawdaddy album launch in March and acoustic gigs around Dublin. The result is a cracking little movie/documentary “Into The Hurricane” which gives a short, sharp intro to the world of Sixteen Layers; the film premiered in June 2008 to a packed Sugar Club, Dublin prior to yet another incendiary performance from the band that had the crowd baying for more. “…………………..they are rock stars” (State Magazine)
In July ’09 Sixteen Layers won the Dublin leg of Indie Week Ireland in Whelans and were invited to Toronto to perform during Indie Week Canada in October ’09.
“Without doubt, the party at Indie Week ’09 was over at The Hideout on Friday night, where Sixteen Layers took to the stage around 1am. … Sixteen Layers was brilliant, really one to remember. This gig had pretty much everything you could want from a rock show … and Sixteen Layers kicked ass and had everyone smiling. For the first time in a long time I saw a band play an encore and this encore was fully merited. I never wanted this show to end. Awesome night. … Sixteen Layers at The Hideout, one of the best shows I’ve ever seen in Toronto.” (Music Vice, Toronto)
The band are now back promoting their recently released double Aside - Exile & Into The Sun – performing at their usual residencies in The Harbour Bar & Think Tank, plus instores, school/college shows & much more, see online for details.
They have been invited to return to Canada in the New Year.
