About me:

"The function of art is to raise doubt. The function of entertainment is to maintain the status quo" Anon.

Doesn't say much about me, being neither an entertainer nor an artist,....but I like it.

What's on my blog at http://sjatkinson01.blogspot.com/ :-

....and the (heart)beat goes on

And now a poem; my first for 10 years so please be kind!

Sagacious

An unknown word to me
When you used it in a text.
I hurried to a dictionary
My ignorance highlighted!
My love ignited!
Now no longer in my vocabulary
Who I'd like to meet:
Anybody with the same outlook and interests or long lost friends from the past as I've trawled and crawled my way through Bournemouth, Reading, Cardiff, London and Worcester over the last 17 years! And if I don't remember you, don't be offended; it has more to do with my piss poor memory than anything else!

Between 1936 and 1939 over 35,000 men and women, from over 50 countries, left their homes to volunteer for the Republican forces to go and help resist Fascism in Spain. More than 2,300 of these came from Britain, Ireland and the commonwealth, of whom over 500 were killed.

Many people ask why did so many risk their lives. This poem, by Cecil Day-Lewis, who also fought in the Spanish Civil War, tries to answer that question.

THE VOLUNTEER - Cecil Day-Lewis

Tell them in England, if they ask
What brought us to these wars,
To this plateau beneath the night's
Grave manifold of stars -

It was not fraud or foolishness,
Glory, revenge, or pay:
We came because our open eyes
Could see no other way.

There was no other way to keep
Man's flickering truth alight:
These stars will witness that our course
Burned briefer, not less bright.

Beyond the wasted olive-groves,
The furthest lift of land,
There calls a country that was ours
And here shall be regained.

Shine to us, memoried and real,
Green-water-silken meads:
Rivers of home, refresh our path
Whom here your influence leads.

Here in a parched and stranger place
We fight for England free,
The good our fathers won for her,
The land they hoped to see
