Television
Television, for the most part, is dumb. Few shows such as The Simpsons, South Park, liberal news, and Discovery Health Channel are worth watching. Pleeeeeeaaaaasssseee KDLT - put the Simpsons back on syndication and take off that damn Megan Mullalley show!!!!!!!!!
Books
I LOVE non-fiction, or fact-based fiction. I'm still obsessed with many books and articles about gender, sexuality, patriarchy, and the status of women in Mozart operas, even though that project is long finished. I am currently reading "Microserfs" by Douglas Coupland - a gen X type book about Microsoft employees. I just finished "The Poisonwood Bible" by Barbara Kingsolver, and I can't wait to read more of her stuff - it's that good. "Bait and Switch " by Barbara Ehrenreich, an account of life as a white collar worker (this followed "Nickel and Dimed" - life in the blue collar workforce). "Life of Pi" - a novel laced with a lot of philosphical perspectives on animals and religion was pretty much amazing. Also working on "The Communist Manifesto", but that will take some time to get through. "Letters to Wendy's" is an easy, quick read that's fun and informative. "Gone With the Wind" engaged my attention like no book has ever done. "The Road Less Traveled" is an insighful look at religion, but not the psycho Christian garbage. I also enjoy poetry - especially Poe, Kerouac, haiku, Cunningham, and Scott Abels (yes, we're related). When I don't want to think and need an escape, I may pick up Danielle Steele - I know, I know - but you have to admit, she is quite talented with her use of descriptions and setting scenes, and sometimes a girl just needs her junk food. "Letters to My Husband" is the worst book ever written - thin plot, no character development, completely self-serving of the author's intent to get published.
Heroes
Tom Daschle, Al Franken, Margaret Cho, Mom, my co-workers who also work full-time AND go to school. Work (and T. Denny Sanford) also inspire me to not want to work there forever.

OMG McShannon did you see Ambre won 'Rock of Love'?!?! Thank GOD it wasn't that slut Daisy. You would have been the best choice for Bret, of course, with maybe the exception of crazy Kristy Joe...;-) ~M
