Vincentian native, born Shernelle Williams but internationally known as Skarpyon, is a melodic and lyrical prodigy. Skarpyon has been singing most of his life and has carved a niche for himself on the musical arena singing genres which include Calypso, Soca and Vincentian own Ragga Soca. His musical roots were nurtured by the most traditional form of Caribbean music, Calypso.
Skarpyon made his first public performance in 1990 at the tender age of 11 where he competed in the junior Calypso competition. Three years later he joined the National Youth Band of St. Vincent and the Grenadines as the lead vocalist. This opportunity proved very beneficial to his future developing his skills as an entertainer/musician.
In 2004, Skarpyon performed a song entitled On Fire in the Ragga Soca competition held in St Vincent and the Grenadines. He emerged the victor. Skarpyon will be one of the many artistes in the first Annual Carnival Development Committee Ragga Soca Monarchy held on June 15th 2008.
In 2005 Skarpyon created his first hit ‘Lookin Fine’. The song along with the video was undoubtedly and still is definitely the lady’s favorite. The following year Skarpyon was nominated for ‘Best new male artist’ and ‘Best collaboration’ in the International Soca Awards. Later that year Skarpyon along with Jamesy P composed ‘Leave Me Alone’ the smash hit of the Caribbean. This song obtained tremendous air play in the Caribbean, North America and Europe. Leave Me Alone went on to win the 2006 Road March in the Vincy Mas celebration (St. Vincent and the Grenadines Carnival). This hit topped Soca charts gaining the 1 position for over 8 weeks. In 2007 ‘Leave Me Alone’ was nominated for two awards; ‘Soca song of the year’ and ‘Best Groovy song Collaboration’ it subsequently went on to win the awards for Best Groovy Song Collaboration. 2006 was also the very first time Skarpyon entered the Soca Monarch competition with the song ‘Carnival Song’ deemed the crowd’s favorite and almost walking away with the title placing second. In that same year ‘Turn The Lights Down Low’ another one of Skarpyon’s releases was awarded Best Ragga Soca in St Vincent and the Grenadines. Three (3) nominations two (2) awards (1) title and topping Soca charts; 2006 proved to be Skarpyon’s biggest year thus far.
The saga continues. In 2007 ‘Turn The Lights Down Low’ and ‘Leave Me Alone’ was signed by VP Records and made it on their 2007 Soca CD ‘D’Soca Zone 7th Flag’. Turn The Lights Down Low is blazing up the air waves practically all over the world; namely Germany, Japan, The Caribbean, America, Canada, Europe, France and the list goes on. ‘Turn The Lights Down Low’ also touched the Urban Life R&B top 85 chart landing in the 6th position. Also, in 2007 Skarpyon released his third album ‘The Element of Soca’. The album is a well orchestrated project combining hits from yesteryear to present day. Such hits would include; On Fire, Turn The Lights Down Low, Leave Me Alone, Lookin Fine, and Carnival Song. In addition Skarpyon for the first time competed in the National Calypso competition formally known as ‘The Big Yard’ with songs entitled ‘The Journey’ and ‘Concerns’. Annually Skarpyon would venture out on a world tour performing throughout the Caribbean, Canada, England, and America. He is a true artist creating his own style by fusing genres. By his piers he is often time called ‘The Crossover King’.
