-ABOUT THIS PAGE-
This is simply a tribute page to Ska music, created and run by a 17 year old kid from Michigan. It was made to show my love for ska, to promote bands and ska music in general worldwide. It is also a place were all ska fans from all around the world can come together and learn a little more about ska and discover more bands and so that society in general can have a better understanding on what ska really is. So, I hope you enjoy the page, and feel free to talk to me if you have any questions or if you would like for me to promote your band! I'll be more than happy to help anyone out!

The History Of Ska!
By Kenny Plont

So, what exactly is “Ska”? Well, Ska is a genre of music, created in Jamaica back in the 1950’s. But my friends, Ska is much more than just a style or a genre of music and I think one local Californian ska band (the Hi-Lites) put it best “Ska is man-to-man, Ska is Woman-to-Woman, Ska Is Unity, and Ska is Love”. Ska is simply the soundtrack to the unity of all mankind. Although Ska has only enjoyed some mainstream success, it continues to have a very dedicated fan base all over the world and is far from being dead.

Ska originated in Jamaica back in the late 1950’s and Early to mid 1960’s. The traditional ska rhythm stressed the second and fourth beats of each bar, with the addition of sophisticated jazz riffs. It all started with Jamaican musicians and producers such as Prince Buster who worked with people like Duke Reid, Rico Rodriguez, Jah Cherry to create the very first ska session known to man. Quickly, Duke Reid, Prince Buster, Clement Coxsonne Dodd and others began producing the first ever ska recordings at Studio one and other recording stations in Kingston. There are several theories on how the name “Ska” came to be, but most believe that it came from the guitar style that came to be in Prince Buster’s sessions when he essentially flipped the R&B Shuffle beat, stressing the offbeat in the music, with major help from the guitar. In the early 1960’s many ska bands and artists began to emerge, such as The legendary Skatalites in 1964, Laurel Aitken who recorded in the UK and in Jamaica, The Wailers and in the mid 1960’s artists such as Desmond Dekker and Toots and the Maytals came to be. Ska was very popular throughout Jamaica and the UK, in the early/mid 1960’s, but towards the end of the decade, Ska became slower and smoother and it evolved into Rocksteady music.

The man who started it all- Prince Buster!

Traditional Ska was the precursor to Rocksteady and Reggae music. The Skatalites, who formed 1964 and are still together to this day, we’re the grandfathers in making ska and reggae music popular over the past 40 or so years. They are best known for their ska anthem- “Guns of Navarone”. Some other great songs by them would be- “Ska Ska Ska”, “Scandal Ska”, “Eastern Standard Time”, “Latin Goes Ska” and many others. Traditional Ska enjoyed a few years of popularity in Jamaica, The UK and other places, until Ska producers and artists began slowing and changing the music, which became Rocksteady and later on came Reggae music.

In the late 1970’s, almost a decade after the fall of popularity of Ska music in Jamaica, The 2 Tone Ska genre was born. This movement started when a keyboardist named Jerry Dammers, who was a member a band, The Specials, founded 2 tone records in England. 2-tone music was a combination of a faster, traditional Jamaican Ska with the British Punk rock. Many 2 tone bands covered songs from Traditional Jamaican bands, such as Madness who covered Prince Buster’s- “One Step Beyond”. The Specials covered numerous Traditional Ska songs, Such as “Rudi, A Message to You” By Dandy Livingstone, “Too Hot” By Prince Buster, “Monkey Man” by Toots & The Maytals and other 2 tone songs were just adaptations of other traditional songs. Other Important 2 tone bands included- The Beat, The Bodysnatchers and The Selecter. All of these bands were signed to 2 tone records, which was named after the two tone suits worn by the ska stars of the 1960’s. The 2-tone movement was very multi racial and all of the 2 tone bands spoke strongly against racism and addressed other political/social issues.

The 2 Tone movement gained some popularity in mainstream music in the 1980’s. 2 tone ska/pop band- Madness was the most successful with hits like “It Must Be Love”, “Our House”, “Baggy Trousers”, along with earlier ska hits in the 2 tone movement such as “The Prince” and their “One Step Beyond” cover. The Specials were famous within England for hits like “Gangsters”, “Too Much Too Young”, “Ghost Town” and others that were huge in the UK at that time. The Selecter was known best for their tracks like “On My Radio”, “Three Minute Hero and “Missing Words”. Another big contributor to the 2 tone movement, was Ska/Pop band, The Beat (also known as The English Beat) and they enjoyed some mainstream success mainly in the UK, but also in North America and around the world with singles like- “Tears Of A Clown”, “Mirror in The Bathroom”, “Hands Off She’s Mine” and “Too Nice To Talk To”. The Specials broke up in 1981, The Beat called it quits in 1983, The Selecter in 1982 and Madness in 1986, but decades later, many 2 tone bands reunited. The Specials got back together in 2008, Madness reunited in 1992 and the Beat in 2003.

Pauline Black of the Selecter put it best- “2 Tone was basically about black and white people playing together”. Many 2 tone songs made it into the British top 10, but it was never super successful anywhere else. After The Specials split in 1981 and The Selecter in 1982, Madness went on to bigger and better things and became very popular and well known worldwide. All female 2 tone band- The Bodysnatchers, who were best known for songs like “Let’s Do Rock Steady”, “Ruder Than You”, “Easy Life” also broke up in 1981, and 2 tone was pretty much dead. Bands like The Friday Club, J.B.’s All-stars, The Apollianires, The Higsons and the new version of The Specials- The Special AKA kept 2 tone alive until “The Alphabet Army” By J.B.’S All-stars was the last single to be released in 1986. 2 Tone was mainly active in the year 1980 with over 16 singles and a few singles were released every year until 1986.

Next, came the epic Third Wave of Ska. The Third wave was mainly started in the United States, in cities like New York and all over California. New Ska bands began to form and play their own versions of Jamaican Ska and 2 Tone. Some bands took a more traditional approach to the Ska, while others started putting Ska with punk and pop punk, hardcore punk, rock and other genres of music. The third wave bands were also heavily influenced by the 2 tone bands of the 1980’s in England. In 1981, New York Ska Band- the Toasters formed, and they are credited with starting the third wave of ska music. The Toasters released there first record in 1985 and are still together today. Other bands such as Let’s Go Bowling, Fishbone and No Doubt began riding the third wave in the mid 1980’s. In the early 1990’s bands all over North America began playing ska with punk and pop punk, rock, hardcore and other genres.

Who have been a major part of the Ska community since 1979.

Bands like Mustard Plug, Less Than Jake, Mu330, Operation Ivy and Reel Big Fish began fusing Ska with punk music in the late 1980’s and early/mid 1990’s. Bands like the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Suicide Machines, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Choking Victim, The Arrogant Sons Of Bitches and many others began combining Ska with Hardcore Punk music. Some bands like Let’s Go Bowling, The Pietasters, The Slackers, The Toasters, Hepcat, Deals Gone Bad, along with many others, took a much more traditional approach to their Ska. Meanwhile, bands like Fishbone who played a lot of Ska, also experimented with other genres like Funk, Metal, Reggae and Rock, Along with the legendary Skankin’ Pickle, who played a mixture of Ska, Funk, Punk, Reggae, Metal, Rap and other genres. California Ska band- The Aquabats, even dressed up as superheroes and many bands began putting their own twist on Ska.

From 1995-1998 Third Wave Ska enjoyed quite a bit of Mainstream success in North America. Bands like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones from Boston, Pop Rock band No Doubt, Ska-Punkers Reel Big Fish & Less Than Jake, California Rock Trio- Sublime, New York Ska Band- The Toasters, East Bay Punks- Rancid, Los Angeles Pop Punkers- Goldfinger, Oregon Swingers- The Cherry Poppin’ Daddies and many other ska bands gained lots of popularity. Some bands got airplay on MTV and on popular TV Shows, in commercials, and some just on radio stations. The Bosstones scored with hits like “Someday I Suppose”, and later on with their “Let’s Face It” album, with several hits, including- “The Impression That I Get”, which received tons of airplay everywhere around the world. Third Wave Ska lyrics talked about a lot of similar subjects as the 2 tone bands, such as social/political problems in North America, Racism, Sexism, Unity and things such as that. Later on, Reel Big Fish scored with their epic ska-punk tune “Sell Out”, Save Ferris scored with “Come On Eileen”, Goldfinger with “Superman” and The Toasters with “Two Tone Army” and their music was also on Coca-Cola & AOL commercials and TV Shows. The summer of 1997 saw much popularity for the third wave of Ska, as many bands became more and more popular. Sadly, towards the end of the summer, Ska’s popularity in mainstream music seemed to be dying out, and people moved on to other genres.

Finally in 1998, it seemed as if Ska was pretty much dead. Bands broke up, got rid of their horn sections and began playing more radio-friendly music. Less Than Jake took a more Pop Punk approach with their next few releases, The Bosstones went on a hiatus, The Aquabats got rid of their horns, No Doubt stopped playing Ska all together, and broke up a few years later. Skankin’ Pickle called it quits, as well did bands like The Suicide Machines, Save Ferris, The Urge, Slapstick, Five Iron Frenzy and many others. Bands like Mustard Plug, Big D & The Kids Table, Reel Big Fish, Mu330, Buck-O-Nine, The Planet Smashers and The Voodoo Glow Skulls all stuck to their roots and kept playing Ska. New bands like Streetlight Manifesto, Westbound Train, Hub City Stompers and many others formed in the early 2000’s and are still alive and kicking today along with many other bands.

In the past few years, bands like Reel Big Fish, Big D & The Kids Table, Streetlight Manifesto and Less Than Jake still remain semi-popular in mainstream music. Along with many bands that are no longer together such as, Operation Ivy and Sublime. In the early 2000’s Less Than Jake had a few hits off of their release- “Anthem”, such as catchy Ska tune- “The Science Of Selling Yourself Short”, which had lots of airplay on MTV, along with other pop punk tunes from the album. Reel Big Fish is still very well known in music today and more Ska bands seem to be becoming increasingly popular. Some bands are still trying new things with Ska, such as Connecticut band- The Flaming Tsunamis, who combine Ska with Hardcore and Metal music, along with The Blue Meanies, Fishbone, High School Football Heroes, The Rx Bandits, The Mad Caddies, The Suburban Legends and Leftover Crack, who all bring a different kind of sound to Ska and other genres, than most bands.

Also, during the mid/late 1990’s many Christian Ska bands emerged from all over North America. The legendary ska-punkers Five Iron Frenzy from Colorado, The O.C. Supertones, The Insyderz and Buck Enterprises from Detroit, King Size Zero, The Israelites, The W’s, Spunge, 200 Proof and many others. Most of the Christian Ska bands from the 90’s and early 2000’s are no longer together anymore though. In Japan, J-Ska has been very popular, with amazing bands like- Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Oreskaband, Kemuri, Yum! Yum! Orange! And Potshot. Oreskaband is an all girl Japanese ska band, who toured all summer on the 2008 vans warped tour in North America and are set to be in a really huge Disney movie. Some believe the fourth wave of ska is about ready to explode in Japan…. But who knows. I guess we will just have to wait and see!

OTHER SKA INFO!

What Instruments do Ska bands usually have in their music?

Well, in all waves of Ska, Many bands have Horns! Such as, Trumpets, Trombones, Tenor/Alto/Bari Sax, and very rarely they use other kinds of horns. But Of course, the main instruments are Guitars, Bass Guitar, Drums and a lot of Ska bands have Piano/Keyboard players too. Some Ska bands like The Selecter, The Aggrolites, The Chinkees use a lot of keyboards and no horns, But most of all Ska bands have some horns in their music. Some Ska bands have occasional keyboards or horns, such as The Suicide Machines, Choking Victim, Operation Ivy, Rancid, Goldfinger and many others, very few bands have never incorporated horns or keyboards into at least a few of their songs. Some bands use lots of keyboards and horns such as The Toasters, Fishbone, The Slackers and others. Currently, Some bands like Streetlight Manifesto have 4 horns, Some Bands like Big D & The Kids Table have 3, Bands like Less Than Jake & Mustard Plug have 2 and even bands like The Rx Bandits, Against All Authority & Tip The Van have only one horn in their band!

Where might I have heard Ska Music before?

The theme song from “America’s funniest home videos” is a ska song, along with numerous commercials. Many ska-punk bands such as Less than Jake and Goldfinger have been on Tony Hawk video games, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones had a few songs in the movie Clueless, along with other movies. Skankin’ Pickle’s- “Turning Japanese” is in many movies, Reel Big Fish in the movie baseketball and many ska bands have been on the Aquabats TV Show- Yo Gabba Gabba on Nick Jr. Many ska bands have also been on cartoon network, Hockey video games, The TV Show- My Name is Earl played Sell out by RBF, Trendy by RBF used to be The Florida Marlins theme song, Fishbone has music in many movies and has actually been in a few such as Idlewild. The Toasters were on Coca-Cola commercials, Ka-Blam, AOL Commercials and more! Ska is everywhere; sometimes people just don’t know it.

What are some Ska record labels?

Ska record labels have all been created by members of ska bands. Moon Ska Records was founded by Toaster’s frontman-“Bucket” in 1981, but Moon Ska shut down in 2000, but is back as Moon Ska World. Bucket also started another ska record label called- Megalith Records in 2003. Tim Armstrong and Brett Gurewitz’s Hellcat Records have also signed ska bands such as The Slackers. Matt Collyer from the Planet Smashers made Stomp Records in 1994. Legendary Skankin’ Pickle lead singer/sax player Mike Park founded Asian Man Records in his parents garage in 1996. Asian Man has helped many ska and punk rock bands release albums, such as Bomb the Music Industry, The Chinkees, Mu330, Less Than Jake, Let’s Go Bowling, Toasters, Potshot, and Monkey and many others. Mike Park also started and ran Dill Records from 1989 till 1998 and Dill recorded bands like Skankin’ Pickle mainly, but also some releases by Slapstick, Less Than Jake, Mu330 and others. Sideonedummy, along with other indie labels have signed some ska bands, and even major labels have had bands like Less Than Jake (Warner Bros.), Reel Big Fish/Goldfinger (Jive), The Suicide Machines (Hollywood/Disney) and Streetlight Manifesto/Voodoo Glow Skulls (Victory). Another well-known ska label is Jump up Records in Chicago.
