GA Vendor, Greg Baldi, Manager of his family's Weirs Beach Drive-In Theater, and I, have had several meetings of the minds within the past few months regarding a Weirs Beach comeback of sorts; when, and I am not knocking bikers, The Weirs was more of an "all summer" family destination, and more than a Bike Week destination ... when it was only a weekend; a time when the former Weirs Chamber of Commerce made the area more invitable and events of all sorts for all ages were constant.
Times like these are one of the major reasons why I moved my family here twelve years ago; along with the encouragement of good friends, John & Louise Flynt, owners of the former Royal Coach Motel, very active in the Weirs Chamber of Commerce and also proponents of the failed movement for Weirs Beach to secede from the City of Laconia. John and Louise have since passed on, but their love and knowledge of the area have spanned generations and continues to this day.
There is so much continuous talk, and much of it only talk, unfortunately, on several topics regarding the return to better times for The Weirs, whether it entail business and property owners' attitude, lack of cooperation and the sharing of constructive ideas between business owners, the national and local economy, aesthetics, etc ... and, I may not be too popular after saying all this, but I am saying it the way I see it is, and has been this way for quite a few years.
Having said all this, and many of you reading this know I could go on, (and on), regarding this subject, I proposed to Greg of holding a Columbus Day Holiday Weekend, (October 7 & 8), event at the drive-in, to coincide with the 2nd Annual Hamden-Weirs Gig. At one time, and not too many years ago, this holiday weekend was the sign off of the summer/fall season; when most The Weirs' businesses closed till the following spring. Also, being foliage season was just another perk, of sorts, to bring visitors to The Weirs for more than one reason.
The past several years, however, this particular weekend has been just the opposite; almost a ghost town compared to what it was, with accommodations' vacancy signs being the norm, as it has been during the recent summer tourist seasons. I remember radio stations announcing bulletins to those accommodations owners who had any rooms available for visitors; heck, I remember disc jockeys asking home owners for empty rooms. It is more than just the economy and the cost of gas creating the adverse situation, because surrounding towns are experiencing at this time are just about the opposite in the amount of visitors and business gained from the holiday and leaf peeping.
Greg readily agreed to my proposal of an event at the drive-in, of which his grandmother, Pat Baldi, "loves" the idea. Also, agreed upon, is to dedicate this event, to be known as the Weirs Family Fall Fest, to John & Louise Flynt. I have already notified their daughter, Melanie Burgess, who is more than happy in assisting with the planning of the event.
The event is to include vendors of just about any category; some GA Vendors that have already confirmed include Bauer Mortgage Group, Mia Bella Gourmet Candles, Reiki Master/Ear Conologist Teena Hawkins ... entertainment to include Doubleshot, and according to band member, Mike Signorine, their performance is to be dedicated to Relevation's late band member, Evan Southwick; to be "MC"ed by Allan Kayser. An antique/exotic car show is planned. We may even throw in an invitation to antique bikes, (and bikers). We might have a few surprises on top of that.
Please contact us ASAP to join in on this event; also, much more information to follow!
