The Jess Show
Writing
Trying to stay healthy (maybe I should ease up on the binge drinking and shared needles...hmmm)
Michigan football
Red Sox Nation!
People watching (probably my favorite hobby...seriously...I don't know how Thoreau found any inspiration out in the woods without any idiots to look at and make fun of)
Movies
making people laugh (*crickets chirping* *single cough*)
Having a constructive argument about something I know too little
Playing with my sisters' kids
Spending time with family (which doesn't happen NEARLY enough - it sucks being an island)
Music
Anyone with a voice, in every way possible
Jeff Buckley (damn the Mississippi, damn it to hell!)
Iron & Wine
Muse
The Arcade Fire
White Stripes
Ray LaMontagne
Damien Rice
Simon & Garfunkel
Sam Cooke
80's one hit wonders
Elton John (the old stuff)
Rufus Wainwright
and a bunch of film music composers: Thomas Newman, Georges Delerue, Chris Young, Wojchiech Kilar, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams...and many, many more...
Don't watch a lot of network TV, but I like:
HBO's brilliant The Wire, by far the best show on TV
Scrubs (best sitcom on TV right now)
Family Guy
Ghost Hunters (it's a Rhode Islander thing)
Food Network
Billiards on ESPN2 (has anyone else seen Allison Fisher take on Karen Corr every other day? Intense, ladies, intense)
Late Night with Conan
South Park
PTI
Other than that I'm usually watching a movie or some random documentary on the History Channel about important April 17ths throughout history (speaking of April 17ths, can you tell me on which date did the first Etch-a-Sketch go into production?)
Books
I like lean, naturalistic stuff, mainly
Tim O'Brien (The Things They Carried is a fucking masterpiece)
James Ellroy
Charles Bukowski (if you're even halfway interested in Bukowski, go watch the documentary Born Into This, it's fascinating)
Hemingway
William Goldman's books on Hollywood
And the Jerry Bruckheimer of the Middle Ages, William Shakespeare (a brilliant writer, yes, but not as high brow as he's given credit for - the man's job was to put asses in seats, and his stuff's as entertaining as it gets)
I also like page turners, Crichton, Harry Potter books, Steve Alten, the usual...I read a lot of short fiction anthologies as well, it's a great way to learn the form
Heroes
Outside of my parents, family and friends, I greatly admire anyone who shuts their ears to the "reasonable" voices and abandons the fallbacks to follow their passions unconditionally. I wish I could do the same.
About me: What's left to say that hasn't been scrawled across the bathroom walls of Greyhound Bus Station 29? I'm the youngest of a small nomadic Irish Catholic family (only 4 kids) whose father's job moved us around a bit. I'm in my sixth state right now (geographically speaking, of course). It's good, though. It toughens you up and slackens your adaptability at the same time. I get antsy living in one place for too long. So it's cool to have something like this where I can keep track of the great people I meet along the way.
Who I'd like to meet: Dad's parents, who died when I was a baby...Jeff Buckley, who died before his time...Tim O'Brien, who's very much alive...Georges Delerue, who isn't...Charlie Kaufman, who drains the surrealism from realism...Teddy Roosevelt, who didn't take shit from anyone...a publishing agent who actually LIKES the work I submit, bounds with joy to print it and wants to pay me for it...anyone who doesn't understand why idiots are often handed the most power...anyone with the balls to bet a six-team parlay on opening week of the NFL season...anyone who agrees the 70's were the greatest decade for film...anyone who doesn't use a cell phone while at a restaurant...
GREAT tune!! Can you tell me the best route to get from the hotel to BWI? The Metro station is across the street, so I wanted to print out my "path". I need to leave by 5:00 Am? My flight is at 8:00.... Thanks brother!! Can't wait to see you and Jess!!!!
Okay.... so I am a double idiot. I missed Jess' B-day, and I went on and on about Eva Cassidy... whom you ALREADY know about! I was listening to one of the CDs you made me, and there she was. Smack in the middle of it. Good job, Molls! Love ya
The Lost Boys!!!!!!!!!! How do you find this stuff??!! I love it! Speaking of love of music, I found a new voice... Eva Cassidy. Check her out on here. I do believe a new cd is in my future.... Love you!!!
