Skipper Boetlek exists as as a Free Haven for artists where ideas can be exchanged and where they can also help each other to spread their work. A Do-it-yourself ethos is core to the spirit of Skipper, which has always sought and will continue to seek to be a truly independent entity in the world of the arts. Skipper Boetlek is an initiative of the Dutch label Skipper, which was founded in 2003. It is a multi-disciplinary network with roots in Holland that have branched into the UK, Sweden, Finland, the USA, Belgium and, Germany. Members of the network are artists in many mediums and include musicians, filmmakers, poets, painters and cartoonists to name but a few. Skipper Boetlek has been realised on both real and virtual stages. They have organised several big and small festivals in a number of venues, ranging from Rotterdam’s Off Corso in 2004, to the Paradiso in Amsterdam in 2005. In 2006 the Skipper Boetlek Festival took place upon a pleasure cruiser in Amsterdam Harbour. As well as these festivals evenings have been organised in other venues like Patronaat in Haarlem, KHL in Amsterdam, Ekko in Utrecht and many other places. Alongside maintaining a website, Skipper has released 16 CD Rom magazines featuring the work of many artists in many fields.
