Album Reviews

"Skipping Girl Vinegars debut album is so goddamned beautiful I really could punch myself…veering smoothly between rousing and ruminative, bittersweet and simply sweet its hard to find fault with any track here… The term ‘crafted’ is often bandied around in album review wankery, but in this case that’s exactly what SGV have done with Sift the Noise. This album hasn’t been ‘layed down’ but carefully lovingly embroidered”.
4.5 Stars - J Mag

“Skipping Girl Vinegar could be your new favourite band… Organic is an overused word in the music business but Sift The Noise feels earthy, warm, genuine and, yes, organic... The title track in particular should be a summer smash… At a time when pop is becoming more disposable, Skipping Girl Vinegar are the real deal”
4.5 Stars Music Australia Guide (MAG)

“You don’t have to look far to find out that Skipping Girl Vinegar are one of the up and coming bands in Australia right now. Thankfully their debut album ‘Sift The Noise’ does nothing to disappoint… an album that surely ranks as one of the finest Australian releases this year.”
Scene Magazine

“Melbourne’s Skipping Girl Vinegar call themselves an ‘old world, alt acoustic four piece obsessed with melody, pop hook and the search to stretch their song-craft’. Well its time to call of the search, cause the band delivers with debut album ‘Sift the Noise”
Time Off Magazine

“Take it from me, this is seriously the first album in all my years of reviewing where every track is good. The album of the year for me… one of the most exciting albums to come out of Australia in a long time, [Skipping Girl Vinegar] have set the bar for music in Australia.”
Parx E Zine

“Sift The Noise. Note that in your diary as one item that's going to be in heavy demand for borrowers and buyers alike.”
4 Stars – The Courier Mail

There’s a hand-crafted beauty to the debut album from Melbourne’s Skipping Girl Vinegar that renders warmth both within and outside the music.”
Mess + Noise

“Sift The Noise is an absolute gem of an album...chock full of timeless tunes... it is only a matter of time before word spreads about this totally genuine and credible little album. Ten fantastic organic pop cuts... Beautiful stuff delivered with true style. Highly recommended.”
5 Stars – Baby Sue (US)

“An Aussie band that’s turned down the overtures of some major industry heavy hitters to remain independent... a beautifully balanced swing through a range of moods... Get the bag, get the album, get Skipping Girl Vinegar. It’s the right thing to do.”
Rip It Up Magazine

“The hype surrounding Skipping Girl Vinegar has bordered on the insane in recent months... the end result is an inescapably great album.”
Inpress Magazine

"An utterly accomplished and addictive album..."
The Brag

~ Biography ~

Skipping Girl Vinegar has had a remarkable 18 months since launching themselves upon Melbourne to a sell-out crowd at the Evelyn Hotel.

-Their debut single ‘One Chance’ was released in September 07. Quickly added to high-rotation on Triple J, ‘One Chance’ was descended upon by radio stations right across Australia ( RRR, PBS, FBI, 4ZZZ, regional and metro ABC)

-The accompanying animated clip for ‘One Chance’ also received critical acclaim with Rage featuring it as their first ever ‘indie clip of the week’. JTV featured it as their "new clip for the week” before it then charted in their Top 20.

-J Mag featured the band in their last issue for 2007

-The band was highlighted in Triple J’s Oz Music month 2007 (November) as a ‘next crop’ artist.

-Over the past twelve months, a groundswell of interest in the band has seen them invited to play supports for Bob Evans, The Lemonheads (USA), Something for Kate, Shout Out Louds (Sweden), Angie Hart, Weddings Parties Anything and Old Man River.'

-Renowned UK Mix Engineer Adrian Bushby (Ben Kweller, Gomez, Foo Fighters) mixed ‘One Chance’ at London’s famous Rak studios. The single was mastered by Greg Calibi (Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Lenny Kravitz) at Sterling Sounds in New York. The remainder of the album and main singles were mixed in Nashville in early Feb 08 by the legendary indie US mix engineer Brad Jones (Josh Rouse, Bob Evans).

Taking their name from the iconic Melbourne neon sign of Audrey the ‘Skipping Girl' in Richmond, Skipping Girl Vinegar is Chris Helm (drums), Mark Lang (Lead Vox, Guitar), Amanthi Lynch (Keys) & Sare Lang (Bass).

SGV recorded their soon to be released debut album ‘Sift the Noise’ in living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens and studios across Melbourne, as well as ‘The Lookout’, a beach shack in Aireys Inlet. 'Sift The Noise' was produced and recorded by Greg Arnold (ARIA winner, APRA songwriter of the year), Caleb James (Brisbane engineer/producer) and soundscape artist and SGV member Mark Lang. Testament to the band’s obsession with melody, pop-hook, and the search to stretch their song craft, the result is a dark, warm, organic record that reflects the environments and journey of the band throughout the writing and recording of the album.

After some serious major label & indie offers in Australia. Skipping Girl Vinegar decided to set up their own label Secret Fox and License their debut album ‘Sift The Noise’ in Australia to Melbourne indie label Popboomerang & MGM. The album was released into Australia on September 13th and has received critical acclaim across the country. The latest single 'Sift The Noise' was added to high rotation on Triple J as well as receiving extensive play on community and ABC radio across the country. The band are currently exploring label partnerships in the US & UK.

Thanks for my letter SGV!  How sweet it is to open an envelope and the contents inside don't have the words 'bill' or 'pay now' included......

Jun 16 2009 9:10 AM

Hi SGV,
I've had 'sift the noise' for a while now and decided to take it along to my Dads CD club last night which consists of middle aged men (haha) who have been listening to music for years, when they get together each month they review a new album which they have bought in the past year. Each person gets to play their CD and then everyone else rates what they think with the "Swim, Float or Sink" system. Its very rare to get everybody to agree that its a swim, but amazingly it happened! everybody gave your CD a swim! I just thought I'd let you know :)
can't wait to see you play again soon

Hey Mark, Chris, Sare and Amanthi

I'm so hanging out to hear your new recordings. Heard you the other day on PBS - great stuff all-round.

I wanted to share with you some lyrics from The Gallant Trees song
'Visit Me Pelican (In My Dreams)'

This is a story about a Pelican
Who said to me "You're not alone"
He was a great conversationalist
Who spoke "Hey don't walk this path of life on your own"
"I'm your friend at home"

Visit me Pelican (In My Dreams)

Cheers and all the best with your upcoming tour -
