Virginia's Yung Skrilla has overcome a lot of adversity to become the versatile, outspoken rapper that he has become today. "I only rap what I have personally been through" says the 20 year old rapper. "A lot of these rappers be fabricating their lives just to sell records and i'm not one of them. You won't see or hear any of rhymes from Yung Skrilla talking about things that I have never personally seen. Leave that to the rappers that have actually been through the drugs, guns, poverty that also have a story to tell". The young rapper also notes that he is 100% himself whenever he gets on the mic. "I gotta' be, because I mean, you can have all the money and fame in the world but what good is it if your fans and your peers don't respect you and what you say in your lyrics"? Skrilla says that he is one young and hungry artist destined to keep hip-hop alive and to continue to put his home state Virginia on the map. "VA is where it's at man, it's a lot of untamed talent here, it's a hotbed full of great artists/groups as well as producers". With one mixtape already under his belt, "Grindin' Mixtape Part 1" as well as many songs on myspace and soundclick, Skrilla has already begun to take the hip-hop world by storm. He began rapping at the age of 13 while in the 8th grade, and soon after that he began to record all the songs and verses that he had written. "Man hip-hop is just in my blood...my mom said I always use to hum and sing along to the old school songs that came on in the car when I was a kid". By the time he started high school at Indian River High in Chesapeake, Skrilla had made a lil' name for himself. He engaged in lunchroom battles as well as letting his classmates hear him rap and also passing out cds full of his material around the school. Skrilla says that he is going to continue working hard to make his dream come true no matter what obstacles are thrown at him. "At the end of the day, it's about where you want to be in life. Me....I know i'm nice wit' this rap sh*** and nobody can take that away from me". The Chesapeake native is very sincere and with great lyricism and delivery, as well as his polished flow, this young kid is more than ready to take hip-hop and his home state of Virginia, by storm.
