Originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Sky King signed with Columbia Records and moved to New York in early 1975. Their first album, Secret Sauce, was released early in that same year. The band toured nationally for three months to promote the album, and received a considerable amount of airplay all around the country.
Returning to New York, the band went back into the studio at Columbia to record their second album. At that point, the label allowed the band to self-produce. Not fully satisfied with the result, Columbia hired Randy Brecker to produce. Much of the material was re-recorded. Still not satisfied, the label added Bob James as executive producer, and brought in Luther Vandross to assist in vocal arrangements. Finally, the recording met with approval. It was mastered, album art was completed, everything was in order.
On the official release date for the album, Another Sun is Rising, the band received a phone call from the record label-- the album was not going to be released after all, and despite having a contract to produce five albums, the band was fired.
Many Sky King fans have wondered whatever happened to the band; there were rumors about a second album, but it was never made available to the public. For the first time, some of that material is being presented here on this website. (Note: the music on this page was digitized from a cassette copy, at least 3-4 generations from the original recordings. The mixes are not the final versions, but they are pretty close.)
There is a lot more to this story, but that's it for the moment.
