“Sky, a precocious talent that had me asking ‘yo is that Ella? How old is this girl?
Furthermore who is this girl?’ the first time I heard her sing. She’s incredible!” - Ras Kwame Radio 1
FROM THE MOMENT I WAS BORN, and as soon as she could,
my mum placed a set of headphones with music playing
over my head” declares a laughing Montique. Maybe it was
this early initiation into a world brimming with aural delights that
instinctively led her to follow a path in singing.
Montique’s petite stature and elfin beauty is something not to
be fooled by. Her compelling voice rises way above your head as
she liberates melodies with a heartfelt passion, reminiscent of a
bygone era. Her distinctive jazz sound flirts seamlessly around
eclectic soul and modern blues genres. Think Phil Spektor and his
Motown ‘wall of sound’ meeting the quirky-ness of Billie Holiday
but for the 21st century and the colours in the painting are
becoming clearer.
But let’s start at the beginning. The daughter of a Jamaican
father and Irish mother, Montique grew up in colourful Shepherds
Bush surrounded by a wealth of music and genres spanning Jazz
to hip hop, reggae to grime indie and soul to R‘n’B.
She made her debut at a local talent show at just 5 years old
and the encouraging audience reactions spurred her to continue
taking part in musicals and talent shows annually up until the age
of 14. She was introduced to Andrew Roachford and Jason
‘Moezart’ Moe who she felt were on the same wave length as her.
They successfully worked alongside her to explore and hone her
sound and song writing skills.
Today her self penned debut album has been scrupulously created
with executive producer Moe at the helm. Moe’s own production
and song writing credits include some of the UK’s best known
artists, Cathy Dennis, Omar Lynden David Hall and Roachford.
This 21 year olds understanding of music, power and vocal
dexterity has meant that many of the tracks that make up the
album were recorded on a first take, a feat that only some of the
world’s greatest vocalists can claim. Her preferred style of song
writing and material comes from an amalgamation of jam sessions
where as she puts it “I close my eyes, open my mouth, press
record and see what happens”.
Her beautifully crafted album is bursting with enchanting
melodies and panache. Montique bares her soul and with originality
beaming through every note sung, prepare to be transported to a
modern day Harlem Jazz Club. Expect fast paced Jazz beats, a
sprinkling of delectably soulful vocals, live instrumentation and
even some toe tapping dance numbers. This album will appeal to
music lovers with the most insatiable of appetites.
Sky Montique represents the antithesis of manufactured popular
music today and provides that much needed injection of real
musicianship and songs that audiences are awaiting. Her command
of the stage and understanding of her craft reveal a strength and
beauty that blows all other competition clear out of the water.
Fresh, innovative and with her sights set on the apex, this diamond
is ready to reveal her sparkle and deliver her inimitable take on
modern jazz to the masses...all you need to do, is surrender to the
inevitable and have your shades at the ready.
