are a young, four-piece, unsigned, Rock/Alternative/Grunge band from [[Essex]]. Who have been together for almost two years (as thier current line-up). Their name is derived from an album by the band [[Porcupine Tree]] called [[The Sky Moves Sideways]], [[Porcupine Tree]] are one of the main influences of the band including bands such as, [[Nirvana]], [[The Beatles]]and [[The Cooper Temple Clause]].
Sky Moves Sideways originally formed in 2004 with three members Tom Smith (guitar), Robbie Lincoln (bass) and Henry Wallace (drums)after 6 months with this line up Robbie after talking with Tom found out that David Smith (tom's younger brother) also played guitar and invited him to join the band. David accepted , and he went to his first practice shortly after and fitted into the band well. At this stage the band were only doing covers although the band had 'dabbled' in song writing but only a song called 'Blood on My guitar' written by tom smith had come to fruition. After playing at their school's battle of the bands their stage presence improved and '''Jäger'''(as they were then called) started looking for more gigs.
After a year and a half with Henry, musical differences caused henry to leave and the band was left with no drummer, however shortly before henry's departure Tom Smith (who had now swapped band rolls with Robbie) had purchased Zoom recording desk and in the gap between drummers the band recorded (with a drum machine) Robbie's newly written song, 'Ally'. Shortly after this the band returned to their local county council's youth project (which involved helping young musicians) and found that Matt (who was in a band when they'd last seen him) was now out of his band and replaced by henry. The remaining three of Jäger had spoken to Matt before and liked him, so they approached him to join the band and he accepted. As this was sort of a new slate now, the band (Newly named 'Sonar') focused on their own material. After a couple of months practicing The band entered the same battle of the bands as they did with henry. They were indecisive with what to call themselves at this performance and settled for the name 'Custom Gauge' after the string gauge David used. The performance didn't go as planned but still the band weren't dis-heartened. After this gig there was a gig at the local carnival and the county council project put them on the bill at this gig the band took on yet another name, which was suggested by one of the youth workers, the band didn't like it too much but went along with it it was 'Sonic Rock'. The band then had a long period writing and learning new material after this the band decided on a name that they wanted to stick with (at least for more than one gig). The band did more gigs at local events with new material and re branded as 'Retrospect'.
David when he first learned guitar in primary school was not too interested and found it more of a chore than a pleasurable thing and for about a year gave it up. But when he joined the band David had a new found passion for it and developed his playing quickly. Also, Robbie had only just started learning bass when he joined Jäger developed his guitar playing and song writing skills incredibly quickly, Matt almost mirrored this as he quickly improved vastly at playing the drums. And as Tom was now playing bass he quickly found that he was far more suited to it and his creativity showed more through his bass playing. It seemed that the band had evolved into its best line-up.
After doing a few more gigs 'Retrospect' decided that they would play a gig at a local hot spot for bands [[The Harlow Square]]. The band decided that the name 'Retrospect' sounded too much like a 60s cover band and changed they're name to '''Sky Moves Sideways''' after the gig at The square the band had a large confidence in their own material and this spurred them on to find more gigs and write more songs
'''Sky Moves Sideways''' now confident in their music wanted to record in a recording studio as all their previous recordings had been home recordings. The band booked an 8 hour recording session with the 'Three Circles Audio' company (who had been the organizers of some of their previous gigs.) The recording went incredibly well and the band were very pleased with the result.
Although the band had done quite a few gigs they had never played (in front of an audience) a set longer than half an hour so they are currently working on new material and creating a set to last an hour or more.
